Last season, select group referee Roger East didn’t once referee a Burnley game; this season he’s already refereed our game at Liverpool and will now take charge of our game tomorrow at Manchester City.

He became a select group official in 2013 but even now, five years on, he doesn’t get Premier League games on a regular basis and tomorrow’s is just his fourth this season with four of his seven games so far having been in the Football League, two of them at League One level.

Our game at Liverpool was only the second time he’d refereed us at Premier League level. Previously he was the man in the middle for our 2-0 defeat at Southampton three seasons ago when he didn’t have a particularly good game. At Liverpool, he certainly appeared, at times, to be influenced by the home crowd, certainly when he astonishingly carded Nick Pope for time wasting.

This season he doesn’t seem to have been involved in too much controversy, other than a game involving Millwall although last season he failed to award Bournemouth a penalty that he later realised was an incorrect decision. He emailed Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe to apologise for his mistake.

This season, in his seven games, he’s handed out 26 yellow cards and one red card. Of the yellows, ten have gone to home team players and sixteen to away team players. The one red card was shown to Millwall’s Lee Gregory in a 2-2 draw at QPR, a decision much to the disgust of Millwall boss Neil Harris.

East’s last game was West Ham’s 1-0 win against Swansea three weeks ago. West Ham had Cheikhou Kouyate, Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho yellow carded alongside Swansea’s Leon Britton and Renato Sanches.

The assistant referees are Constantine Hatzidakis (Kent) and Sian Massey-Ellis (West Midlands). The fourth official is Bobby Madley (Ossett) whose last Burnley game was the final game of last season at home against West Ham.
