Good four days for the dev squad
It’s been a good week for our development squad who have turned out two completely different teams in a matter of days to draw at Sunderland in the Premier League Cup and then beat Preston, this afternoon, in a behind closed doors friendly.
It looked as though it was going to be a difficult game for our very young side in the cup game played at Eppleton Colliery Welfare against Sunderland but they came back with a creditable 1-1 draw; Jimmy Dunne scored our goal.
You can read a REPORT of the game, posted by Ashingtonclaret46 on the message board.
This afternoon it was very much a shadow first team squad who beat Preston 3-0 in a home friendly with all the goals coming in the first half.
We were in front as early as the 7th minute when James Tarkowski headed home a cross from fit again Johann Berg Gudmundsson and it was the Icelander who doubled the lead on 20 minutes with a superb curling effort. 2-0 became 3-0 right on half time when Michael Kightly slotted home after a terrific run by Tendayi Darikwa.
That was it in terms of the goals, Burnley winning 3-0.
The team was: Nick Pope, Tendayi Darikwa, Kevin Long, James Tarkowski, Jon Flanagan, Michael Kightly, Aiden O’Neill (Jamie Thomas 75), Trialist, Steven Defour, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Patrick Bamford. Subs not used: Conor Mitchell, Arlen Birch, Jimmy Dunne, Brad Jackson.
There have been no clues as to who the trialist might be and for those who missed the news yesterday – we’ve re-signed Joey Barton.
The development squad have three more games scheduled, against Newcastle, Fleetwood and Wigan before the Premier League Cup resumes in January with a home game against Blackburn on Monday 23rd January, kick off 11 a.m.
