Burnley’s pursuit of West Brom pair Craig Dawson and former Claret Jay Rodriguez seems to be just about the worst kept secret this summer.

There had been a lot of speculation even before the 2017/18 season came to an end and it all came to the fore again with reports that we’d had a £25 million offer for the pair rebuffed by the relegated club.

While Jay Rod has got on with things in pre-season, Dawson, along with goalkeeper Ben Foster, opted not to go on the pre-season training camp to Portugal although both did return to training with the squad on their return.

Since, Dawson has, according to West Midlands sources, handed in a transfer request to try to force a move to Burnley, although West Ham too have had an offer refused, with Foster last night completing a move to Watford.

Also, late last night, the Daily Mail reported that we had walked away from it all with the two clubs miles apart in valuations, the newspaper reporting that Burnley would go no higher than £30 million with West Brom wanting a further £10 million.

“Burnley are moving on from pursuing Jay Rodriguez and Craig Dawson after West Bromwich Albion stuck firm on a combined valuation worth almost £40 million,” the newspaper reported, added: “Sean Dyche has been trying to sign the duo this summer and Burnley saw bids for each worth a total of £25m rejected by West Brom three weeks ago.

“But West Brom are demanding £20m for Dawson and a similar amount for Jay Rodriguez, although it is thought a deal for the striker could be struck at £18m.”

The suggestions from the West Midlands are that both players will move on this summer. Will that be to Burnley or elsewhere? Has the Mail, for once, got it right?
