Burnley have developed a reputation for going out of the League Cup early. In the past six seasons we’ve been beaten by Sheffield Wednesday, Port Vale, Accrington, Leeds, Burton and Sunderland while Blackburn, with the easiest of 2-0 wins, the only side we have beaten.

It usually leads to us having very little interest in the third round draw, other than two seasons ago when we didn’t go into the competition until that stage because of our European commitments. This season though, we will have interest when the third round draw is made even though it might just be a case for us, given our record in this competition, of here is what you could have won.

The reason for that is the fact that the second round draw will take place this Sunday following the Brentford v Wycombe tie and will be immediately followed by the third round draw which at least means we will be involved in the draw this year.

Bournemouth and Watford will come in for the second round alongside the thirteen Premier League clubs not involved in Europe while the remaining seven Premier League clubs will join from the third round.

Neither round will be seeded although the second round will remain split with a north and a south section. Both draws will be shown live on Sky Sports News after that tie at Brentford which kicks off at 12 noon. Phil Babb will be making the two draws.

All the League Cup dates are shown on the Friendlies and Key Dates page.
