We didn’t have long to wait for Burnley’s number five to be drawn for the second round of the League Cup; it was the first out and we’ve landed ourselves a home time against Sheffield United, one of only two teams in the draw who finished last season ahead of us.

It will be just the second time the two sides have met in this competition. The last time was back in 1966/67 in the third round after we’d beaten Shrewsbury a round earlier. Sheffield United beat us 2-0 on that occasion on their way to the last eight of the competition before they were knocked out by Birmingham in the fifth round.

The ties in the second round this season are scheduled to be played in week commencing 14th September but there is an additional problem with Sheffield United already set to kick off their Premier League campaign on Monday, 14th September at home against at home against Wolves.

A confirmed date for the only all Premier League tie in the round will follow.
