Home draw in FA Youth Cup
Burnley have received a home draw in the FA Youth Cup 3rd round against either Bradford City or Boston United and that’s given us a reminder of our run to the semi-final seven seasons ago.
In that campaign the first draw paired us with the same two sides. On that occasion Boston beat Bradford City 2-1 and we travelled to Boston on a bitterly cold December night.
Jason Gilchrist (pictured) scored a hat trick that night in a comprehensive 7-0 win with the other goals coming from Steven Hewitt, Cameron Howieson, Alex Mullin and an own goal.
That season we went on to beat Ipswich, West Brom and Fulham in subsequent rounds before going out one round away from the final. Gilchrist didn’t add to his FA Youth Cup tally that season, although he did get another 3rd round hat trick a year later against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
We’ve also played Bradford City once in the competition but that was back in the 1965/66 season with us coming through that one with a 2-1 win.
We will know our opponents next Tuesday and our third round tie must be played on or before Saturday 17th December. Will it be déjà vu and another date with Boston? At least it won’t be the Metropolitan Police who embarrassingly beat us last season. They face Newcastle should they get through their 2nd round tie against Portsmouth.
