Hooper to referee us for second time in Premier League
Wiltshire Simon Hooper will be the man with the whistle when we play Sheffield United tomorrow at Bramall Lane and it will be just his second Burnley game in the Premier League having previously taken charge of our 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park two seasons ago.
That game at Newcastle was just his second in the Premier League; the first had come almost 18 months earlier when he had a difficult game at Norwich. There were more Premier League games last season and, to date, one this season.
That one Premier League game this season also featured Sheffield United; Hooper refereed their 2-0 win at Everton back in September. Of his other seven games, five have been in the Championship, one in League One and his most recent game was back at Goodison Park for Tuesday’s League Cup tie between Everton and Watford that the home side won 2-0 in which there were two yellow cards for Watford pair Adrian Mariappa and Abdoulaye Doucouré.
He has never shown a red card in the Premier League; his most recent red card was last February when he dismissed Southend’s Dru Yearwood in their 1-1 draw at Charlton. He has shown 34 yellow cards in his eight games this season, including those two at Everton. Of those, 18 have gone to home team players and 16 to away team players.
Football League referee Steve Martin is on fourth official duties tomorrow. His last Burnley game was our 2-1 win at Bolton in February 2016. Over at Stockley Park is Graham Scott who has already refereed two Burnley games this season, the home games against Southampton and Everton.
