Manchester United beat us yesterday at Old Trafford and their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was really pleased with the win because it came about with late goals.

He said: “We have improved and we have been better at winning games towards the end of games. Our fitness now, with all the games we’ve had, the boys are capable of churning out ninety minutes and the fitter you are, the more you can do. I have always said that. The harder you train and the harder you play, the more ready you are.

“That’s the pleasure I get from winning games like this because last season we didn’t have them, but this season we have done that loads and that is down to the training ground and the attitude of the players.”

Sean Dyche, who was questioned about us dropping to 17th in the table over the weekend, was pleased with the performance if not the result. “I felt we deserved something overall,” he said. “We know they’ve been in strong form, but I thought the performance level from us was good and the mentality to take the game on was excellent.

“We altered the shape and I was very pleased with our approach and our energy. Other than a couple of moments, we were very tidy with our defending and there were some really good performances today. We’ve made a few mistakes recently but today was a good performance.”

He added: “You have to ask questions of your opponent and today I thought we did, and barring a really unfortunate bit of luck, when Corky got a block and it wrong foots the keeper, we may have seen the game out.

“You come away and you are scratching your head on that one, and it’s a bitter pill because at that stage we were handling the game really well. At the end we open up and they get a third, but I can’t be disappointed. A lot of the performance was right and the biggest thing is the mentality.

“Over a season you believe in performances. You’ll take a lucky one but overall you want to give performances that can win and we’ve certainly done that in the last three games.”

Given the current situation, he stressed: “The mentality is still strong here. You can see that from the players and at the end of the day we’ve worked hard for everything we’ve got in the Premier League. We’re not relying on anyone else because you can’t. If something happens elsewhere that affects you, then great, but we make sure we look after ourselves and that’s our intention.”
