vokes long hendrickFollowing on from yesterday’s news that Matěj Vydra is in the latest Czech Republic squad comes news that three more Burnley players have been called up for their respective countries.

Earlier today, Sam Vokes was named in Ryan Giggs’ Wales squad for a friendly against Spain which will be followed by the return fixture against the Republic of Ireland. The Spain game will be played one week today at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff with the Nations League game against Ireland in Dublin five days later.

Prior to the second of those games, Ireland will play Denmark, also at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, on Saturday 13th October. That game is also in the Nations League. There is no place for either Robbie Brady or Stephen Ward in the Ireland squad but both Kevin Long and Jeff Hendrick have received call ups.

O’Neill explained his decision on Brady which also gave us an indication of why he didn’t feature for the under-23s last Monday. He said: “I spoke to Robbie and his manager. He was going to play a game on Monday but had a bit of a setback. It’s only a minor knock but it’s tough to bring him in when he hasn’t played games.”

Burnley have confirmed that Ward has also been excluded as he recovers from an injury. He played last week at Burton in the League Cup but was out of the squad at Cardiff last Sunday as he had been in the previous league game against Bournemouth.
