It’s cup night for the youth team at Wimbledon
Tonight sees the under-18s take time out from the U18 Premier League to kick start our FA Youth Cup campaign with a third round tie at Plough Lane against AFC Wimbledon.
The game was originally scheduled to have been played in January but the competition was suspended and has just recently got back underway with games to be played on a regular basis through to the final in May.
It’s our first game in the competition this season and we’ll be hoping to go as far, in not further, than last season when we reached the last eight before going out in a 1-0 defeat at Manchester City, this having beaten Curzon Ashton, Mansfield and West Brom in the previous rounds.
Our squad has been beset by injuries and there will be a number of key players missing tonight and coach Tony Philliskirk said: “There is pressure on us, being the Category One Premier League side, expected by many to go and win, but it’s not as simple as that and we all know that. We have to prepare right, which we have been doing, and the lads are all ready for the game.”
The two sides have met previously in the competition and that was six years ago and again in the third round. On that occasion we won 2-1 with goals from Ntumba Massanka and Brad Jackson with Dan Agyei impressing for Wimbledon. We then beat Cardiff 3-1 at home in the next round before going out at Nottingham Forest in round five.
Kick off tonight at Plough Lane is 6 p.m. and our opponents are streaming the game live on their YouTube channel.
