It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that tonight’s game against Manchester United is being refereed by Jon Moss. He’s already refereed the home game against Manchester City this season and last season he refereed three of our four league games against the Manchester clubs with big decisions going against us in both away games.

At City last season, after he’d failed to send off Vincent Kompany for a shocking high challenge on Aaron Lennon, he then caused confusion by all but giving a penalty. He changed his mind as the ball went out of play. He and his hapless assistant Eddie Smart, who we have again tonight, missed that as they did the clear offside and the goal was given.

Then at Old Trafford, he just couldn’t wait to give a penalty. He gave one when the incident, which wasn’t even a foul in the first place, was outside the box and had to change his decision. Then he gave one for the softest of touches that would never have been given at the other end.

Tonight will be his third Burnley game this season; the away defeat at Leicester and that home game against City being the other when, at least, the result was decided by one team playing well and the other not so well. The Leicester game ended in controversy but that was down to VAR overruling a perfectly good goal that had already been given by Moss.

He’s not the most popular of referees with Burnley fans and the list of games below shows a number where he’s not had very good games so it is no surprise to see him with a low RATE THE REF rating.

This season, Moss has refereed a total of 19 games which includes 15 Premier League games, one in the Championship and three cup ties. In those games there have been 62 yellow cards and two red cards. Of the yellows, 34 have gone to home team players and 28 to away team players. The two players he’s sent off are Everton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, in a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in Arsenal’s 3-2 home win against Aston Villa.

His most recent game was Villa’s 6-1 home defeat against Manchester City a week last Sunday. Villa had both Jack Grealish and Anwar El Ghazi yellow carded alongside City’s Fernandinho.

Martin Atkinson, who refereed our 1-0 win at Bournemouth, is fourth official tonight while Graham Scott, who refereed our home wins against Southampton and Everton, is the VAR official at Stockley Park.
