It’s Manchester United and it’s Moss
Burnley face Manchester United this afternoon at Old Trafford and the game will, hardly surprisingly, be refereed by Jon Moss.
This fixture isn’t new to him. He was the referee for both games against them in the 2018/19 season and has subsequently been the referee at Old Trafford in the two following seasons, including today, and that means he’s refereed four games between these two sides in just over two and a half years. We can also add to away games against Manchester City to that during the same time.
Since our win at Everton he’s refereed just three games. The first of them was the 3-3 draw between West Ham and Arsenal at the London Stadium after which he made a rare appearance in the Football League, refereeing the Reading v Derby game and more recently, nine days ago, he refereed Wolves’ 1-0 win at Fulham in which there were no cards.
In total, he’s refereed 27 games this season in which there have been 67 yellow cards. Of those, 35 have gone to home team players with 32 to away team players. The dismissal of Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles in their 3-2 home win against Aston Villa in September 2019 remains his most recent Premier League red card.
Robert Jones is fourth official, and he’ll be remembered by Burnley fans following his performance in our game at Leeds over the Christmas period. Darren England is on VAR duty. Although he has refereed us twice in cup ties, home defeats against Sunderland in the League Cup and Bournemouth in the FA Cup, he’s still to referee one of our Premier League games.
As for Moss, today will be the 18th time he’s refereed us in the Premier League, a total only bettered by Mike Dean and Martin Atkinson.
