Manchester referee Chris Kavanagh will referee our home game tonight against Leicester in what will be his first Turf Moor game since the last home fixture of last season against Liverpool.

He has refereed us twice previously this season. He was in charge of the reverse fixture at the King Power and then refereed our draw at Southampton.

He currently sits fourth in the RATE THE REF table with a rating of 72.49 out of 100., That suggests he’s done well in previous games but he’s been in the spotlight this week for all the wrong reasons. It was Kavanagh on VAR duty who somehow managed not to award Everton a potential match saving penalty for handball, a decision that has brought about an Everton complaint to the Premier League and an apology from Kavanagh’s boss Mike Riley.

Paul Tierney was the on field official and the same pair earlier in the season astonishingly allowed Harry Kane to stay on the pitch in Spurs’ home game against Liverpool.

Kavanagh, on the pitch, has refereed just seventeen games this season of which twelve have been in the Premier League. In those games there have been 69 yellow and two red cards. Of those yellows, 31 have gone to home team players and 38 to away team players. The two players sent off came in consecutive games. He dismissed Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa in a 4-1 home defeat against West Ham and Mason Holgate at the end of Everton’s home 0-0 draw against Spurs.

He refereed in Prague this week but his last domestic game was West Ham’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle a week last Saturday. Both teams had three players yellow carded in the game.

Fourth official tonight is Anthony Taylor. His one Burnley game this season was the home defeat against Arsenal. Retired referee Lee Mason is on VAR duty. His final Burnley game was last season’s home win against Wolves after which Nuno Espirito Santo suggested that Wolves didn’t want him refereeing any more of their games.
