Ali Koiki was offered a new deal by the Clarets at the end of last season but there has been no confirmed news since with speculation that he wasn’t going to sign it and would be looking for a new club.

That now seems to be the case and he’s currently on trial with League One club Charlton Athletic and he’s been named as a substitute by manager Lee Bowyer for their pre-season friendly this afternoon against Southend.

It’s believed that a lack of first team option was the basis for Koiki opting to look elsewhere. He did enjoy a loan at Swindon in League Two during the second half of the 2018/19 season. He made his debut for them in a 2-2 home draw against Lincoln in January 2019 and went on to make a total of 15 league appearances, all but two of them starts.

Last season, however, he remained with the Clarets all season, featuring in the under-23s. He played on some occasions in his familiar left back position and on others further forward down the left hand side and he went on to lead the scoring charts for the team with ten goals with all but one of them coming by early November.

He has been involved with the first team. He was on the bench for our FA Cup tie against Peterborough and would surely have been involved in the latter part of the season had he committed to a new deal and, with Charlie Taylor suffering an injury, might just have got his first team bow for the Clarets, something that now looks unlikely as he looks for a new club.
