Late change means Atkinson is tonight’s referee
Last Tuesday, the Premier League confirmed that Andre Marriner would referee tonight’s game at Everton, but a late change will see Martin Atkinson take the whistle for what will be his first Burnley game since last season’s 2-0 home defeat against Manchester City.
That was Atkinson’s only Burnley game last season and there was only one in the previous season when he refereed our 1-0 win at Bournemouth. There had been nine games in the previous two seasons and there have been a total of 27 Burnley games which started on the night the lights went out at Crewe in 2005.
Now aged 50, he’s refereed three Premier League games this season in which there have been eight yellow cards and one red card. Five of those yellows have gone to home team players with three to away team players.
Three of those came in his most recent game, Manchester City’s 5-0 home win against Arsenal. City’s Rodri was carded along with Arsenal pair Cédric Soares and Sead Kolašinac. That was the game that also saw him give out a red card for the firs time in 2021 when he rightly dismissed Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka.
Atkinson was initially scheduled to have fourth official duties tonight, but that role will now be in the hands of Mike Dean who refereed our previous away game at Liverpool. Kevin Friend, whose last Burnley game was the final game of last season at Sheffield United, and who has not refereed since, will be on VAR duty.
