Late Everton goals take them to the top
Everton came from 2-0 down to beat us 3-2 last Saturday in the U18 Premier League after we’d had a player sent off and it was enough to take them to the top of the league by the narrowest of margins ahead of Manchester City.
Derby had led the league going into last week’s fixtures but they were without a game and knew there was a likelihood that some teams could pass them and both Everton and Manchester City did along with Middlesbrough who have now moved into third place. While Everton were beating us, the other two won what could be considered derbies; Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 while Middlesbrough won 4-3 at Newcastle.
I did suggest that Everton led by the narrowest of margins. Both they and City have won three and drawn one, both have scored eleven goals and both conceded five which leaves Everton on top by virtue of alphabetical order.
We’ve dropped to ninth in the table after suffering that third successive defeat against Everton but the game did seem to turn on the red card in what otherwise was considered a good performance. We are one of three teams on three points while below us are Stoke on goal difference, Newcastle with one point and both Blackburn and Sunderland who are still to get off the mark.
In the south, only Leicester are still searching for their first point with Aston Villa leading the way with four wins out of four and two points clear of Spurs at the top.
It’s international break time and this league takes its own break too. We’ll next be in action a week on Saturday with a home game against our local rivals Blackburn.
The player featured this week is defender Finlay Armstrong who has played in all four of our games to date in the league.
