Late goal costs under-21s in first home game
The under-21s had to settle for a point from a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City today but it took late equalising goals in each half from the visitors to deny us a victory.
Andy Farrell made just two changes from the team beaten at Millwall last Monday with a trialist coming in to partner Dan Sassi in the centre of the defence and Owen Dodgson at left-back, replacing Joe Ashton and Brad Grant who were named as substitutes.
It didn’t take said trialist long to make his mark on the game. In only the fifth minute he got on the end of a Marcel Lewis free kick to head home. It was our first real chance of the game but there were others during a first half we dominated almost from first until last.
Approaching half time, we still led by just that one goal but on 41 minutes, from nowhere, Cardiff drew level with a headed goal from Cody Twose. It could have been worse too, a minute later they forced goalkeeper Charlie Casper into his first save of the game.
Level at half time and I think it’s fair to say that we didn’t dominate in the second half as much as in the second but still looked the more likely of the two sides which was at least reflected in the scoreline when we regained the lead ten minutes in.
Tom Tweedy (pictured) it was who finished it but it owed so much to the brilliance of Lewis Richardson who moved past a number of Cardiff players before slipping the ball through to Tweedy.
For the remainder of the game, we had enough chances to ensure victory but failed to take any of them and we paid the price four minutes into stoppage time when, following a scramble in the box, Joe Colwill was able to turn the ball home and win Cardiff a very unexpected point.
