Late goal costs youths and Wigan increase lead at the top
We are still third in the U18 Professional Development League despite Crewe Alexandra beating us 3-2 last Saturday morning at Gawthorpe.
It was, yet again, as it is likely to be for the remainder of the season, a very young Burnley team with five first year scholars and five under-16s joining goalkeeper Harry Allen (pictured) in the starting line up.
Twice we were in front with goals from under-16 players Michael Mellon and Sean Etaluku but Crewe twice came back and then scored a late winner which leaves us three points clear of fourth place Barnsley who beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 to move ahead of them.
Our team last Saturday was: Harry Allen, Joel Connolly, Jake Rooney, Matty Carson, Finn Armstrong, Ruairi Behan, Corey Brennan, Jackson Coppack, Sean Etaluku, Michael Mellon, Kade Ratchford. Subs: Lewis Thomas, Udoka Chima, George Walters, Knowles, Will Hugill.
The big game in the northern group was that between top two Wigan and Sheffield United. Although they have two games in hand, Sheffield United kicked off eight points behind Wigan and needed a positive result to give themselves a chance. It was Wigan who won it though and they’ve now stretched that lead at the top to twelve points.
Storm Dennis hit the south group with only two of the five matches going ahead. One of those games saw Millwall’s lead at the top reduced to three points with Watford moving closer having drawn at Cardiff.
