Tonight’s League Cup fourth round tie against Manchester City will be refereed by Andy Madley who will be taking charge of a game at Turf Moor for the first time in over four and a half years since he was the referee for our home game against Nottingham Forest in February 2016.

When his name appears it always takes me back to that game early in the 2013/14 season at Derby when he awarded them the most ridiculous of penalties against Jason Shackell which, fortunately, they failed to score from.

It will be just his seventh Burnley game tonight and, in fairness, it really is just that penalty incident that stands out and there have been very few problems since. Four of those previous six games have been at home, the other on the road was his most recent Burnley game at Newcastle this season back on the last day of February.

He hasn’t refereed in the Premier League this season. Tonight will be his fourth game of 2020/21 with one of them coming in the Europa League. His two domestic games have both been in the Championship and in those two games there have been just three yellow cards. His most recent game was Birmingham’s 1-1 home draw against Rotherham last Saturday with both goals coming from the penalty spot in the last three minutes. There were just the two yellow cards in that game for Birmingham’s Ivan Sunjic and Angus MacDonald of Rotherham.

His fourth official tonight is Mike Dean but there is no VAR which is not being used in this season’s League Cup until the semi-finals.
