Bobby Madley will referee our home game tomorrow against West Ham United at home in what will be his fourth Burnley game of the season having previously refereed the away games at West Ham, Sunderland and Crystal Palace .

There are 18 referees in the Select Group who are tasked with refereeing Premier League games and all this season have been in their charge apart from the recent West Brom v Southampton game which was refereed by Chris Kavanagh, a referee clearly being looked at for promotion.

Of those 18, only two haven’t refereed us this season. One of them is Neil Swarbrick who has still only once taken charge of a Burnley game, the 1-0 win at Barnsley late in the 2013/14 season; the other is Roger East who was on fourth official duties last week at Bournemouth and was last in the middle as the title was won at Charlton a year ago.

With this a fourth of the season for Madley, it brings him level with Mark Clattenburg, Mike Jones and Anthony Taylor, all of who have also refereed four of our Premier League games in 2016/17.

It’s just three weeks since Madley’s last Burnley game, the 2-0 win at Crystal Palace when we recorded our only win of the season.

Tomorrow will be his 35th game of the season. Just two of the 34 to date have been in the Football League, three in cup competitions with the other 29 in the Premier League.

In those games he’s handed out a total of 142 yellow cards with 71 going to both home and away team players. He’s also shown four red cards, the most recent of them to Hull’s Oumar Niasse in a 2-0 home win against Watford; that decision was overturned.

Madley’s last game came last week with Manchester City’s 2-1 home win against Leicester. Both teams had three players yellow carded, they were Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Ageuro along with Christian Fuchs, Yohan Benalouane and Marc Albrighton of Leicester.

Tomorrow will be just his fourth Turf Moor game and in each of the previous three he’s given three game changing, and incorrect, decisions. He sent off Kieran Trippier, wrongly, for hand ball against Charlton in 2012/13 and in the following season he gave a ridiculous penalty against Jason Shackell in the League Cup defeat against West Ham and later in the season sent off Derby’s Chris Martin for supposedly diving.

Hopefully we can end the season tomorrow without any controversial decisions.

The assistant referees are Peter Kirkup (Northamptonshire) and Matthew Wilkes (West Midlands). The fourth official is Jeremy Simpson (Lancashire) who is still to referee a Burnley game.
