Marney wins first man of the match award
Dean Marney, now back to full fitness after a stop start return to the side last season, turned in an excellent performance in the midfield in our 1-0 opening day defeat against Swansea City, a performance that has won him both the man of the match vote and the player ratings.
He was a clear winner in both, and certainly the man of the match vote where he polled a massive 61% per cent with no other player reaching double figures. Three players did win 9% of the vote with Michael Keane, with one vote more than the other two, taking second place ahead of our two strikers Andre Gray and Sam Vokes.
The same four players contested the top four places in the player ratings too with Marney again the winner. With a rating of 7.45 out of 10, he was way ahead of the field. Gray this time took second place with a rating of 6.77 with Keane and Vokes just behind, both having a rating of 6.72 out of 10.
Up the Clarets, for the first time, is able to use these points towards deciding the player of the year and, as was the case previously, five points will be awarded for first place with the next three players winning three points, two points and one point each in both the man of the match and the ratings. On this occasion, with a joint third in each, both players will collect two points.
Adding all those points together, Marney is the early player of the year leader having won the maximum ten points. Both Gray and Keane have five points with Vokes just one point behind on four.
The next man of the match vote will be for the Liverpool game and that will be underway within an hour of the final whistle.
