Andre Marriner will referee both teams for the first time this season when he takes charge of our game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tomorrow afternoon.

Marriner refereed three Burnley games last season, both home and away against Southampton and the home game against Arsenal when he fell for a bit of squealing but did at least reverse his red card decision against Erik Pieters. Tomorrow will be his 13th Burnley Premier League game and his 17th in total, the first of which was against Southampton in the Championship back in the 2005/06 season.

We’ve never had any major issues with him and, since the introduction of RATE THE REF he’s done well where he sits second with a rating of 78.54 out of 100.

He’s refereed just six games this season with five in the Premier League and one in the League Cup. Those six games have brought a high total of 28 yellow and two red cards, the two reds coming one each in his last two Premier League games. The yellows have gone fourteen each to home and away players. He sent off Jonjo Shelvey in Newcastle’s party day defeat against Spurs and last week dismissed Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte in their shock home defeat against Crystal Palace. City also had both Ederson and Bernardo Silva with Palace collecting four yellow cards. They too had their goalkeeper Vincente Guaita carded alongside Conor Gallagher and Jordan Ayew.

Fourth official tomorrow is again Michael Salisbury, for the third time in recent weeks, but still to referee a Burnley game. Mike Dean refereed our first away game of the season at Liverpool; tomorrow he’s on VAR duty.
