Andre Marriner will referee tomorrow’s home game against Manchester City and this will be his first Burnley game since he refereed the same fixture two seasons ago.

It was his third Burnley game that season but only his sixth since he started refereeing in the Football League back in August 2003 when he kicked off with a Division Three game between Lincoln and Oxford at Sincil Bank with Lincoln’s Simon Yeo getting his first red card.

His first Burnley game was our home fixture against Southampton in 2005/06 but by then he’d already been elevated to the Premier League. He got his first game in the top flight in November 2004, a 4-0 win for Charlton against Norwich, and by the start of the 2005/06 he’d joined the select group of referees.

Prior to us getting into the Premier League ourselves he refereed two more of our games, the horrible 3-0 New Year’s Day defeat at Blackpool in 2008 and then the League Cup win against Arsenal later in the same year.

He was the only select group referee not to have a Burnley game in 2009/10. The only time he was allocated to one of our games being the home game against Stoke which was called off because of the weather but two seasons ago the City game was his third Burnley game having previously been in charge of the home defeat to Everton and the 2-1 home win against QPR.

I think it is fair to say that he’s not caused us any problems when he’s refereed us and he even missed what should have been a late penalty for City last time. That’s reflected in his RATE THE REF rating of 74.90 out of 100.

This season he’s refereed nine games domestically, all of them in the Premier League. There have been 35 yellow cards in those games and one red card, that shown to Hull’s Ahmed Elmohamady in their 5-1 defeat at Liverpool. Of those yellow cards, 16 have gone to home team players and 19 to away team players.

His last game was the 1-1 draw between Manchester United and Arsenal last week at Old Trafford when both teams had three players yellow carded. They were Matteo Darmian, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney of United and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, Alexis Sanchez and Granit Xhaka.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Simon Beck (Bedfordshire) and Andy Garratt (West Midlands). The fourth official is Jon Moss who refereed our opening day game against Swansea.
