Marriner is not a regular where Burnley games are concerned. He’s been a select group referee now for fifteen years but in our almost six seasons in the Premier League this will be just his eighth Burnley game and two of the previous seven have also been fixtures against Manchester City. He was the referee in charge when we beat them 1-0 at home with a George Boyd goal in the 2014/15 season and two seasons later was the referee when they beat us 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in what was our first game in 2017.

He currently sits second in RATE THE REF. His rating is 78.54 out of 100 and that sees him only behind leader Mike Dean. It’s no surprise; looking back at his Burnley games I can’t really see one that stands out as a bad game.

The 49-year-old refereed the Championship game between Charlton and Luton in February but that’s been his only game this season outside of the Premier League other than one game in each of the cup competitions. He’s refereed a total of 20 games this season in which there have been 57 yellow and two red cards.

Those yellow cards have been far more likely to go to away team players; they’ve collected 37 of them with just 20 having gone to home team players. The red cards have been one each. He sent off Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand in their 9-0 home defeat against Leicester back in October and in his very next Premier League game he dismissed Watford’s Christian Kabasele in a 2-0 win at Norwich.

Marriner’s last game was the 0-0 draw between Wolves and Brighton at Molineux on 7th March. Romain Saiss (Wolves) was yellow carded in that game alongside Brighton’s Lewis Dunk, Martin Montoya and Dan Burn.

His fourth official at Manchester City for this game is Andy Madley; he refereed our most recent away game at Newcastle. Kevin Friend is on VAR duty and his last Burnley game was our 3-0 defeat at Chelsea in January.
