On Tuesday, Andy Madley refereed Burnley for a third time this season and tomorrow it will be the same for Steve Martin at Bolton having already refereed our home game against Sheffield Wednesday and the 5-0 win last month at MK. Prior to that, Martin had only refereed one Burnley game, that at Yeovil in January 2014.

It’s fair to say we’ve had absolutely no problems with him in the three games, and when called on to make a big decision at MK, he did just that and showed MK’s Antony Kay a red card.

It’s a family affair; his dad Andy was a Premier League assistant referee and Steve is now in his fourth season as a Football League referee. He kicked off with a red card in his first game, dismissing Gillingham’s Tom Flanagan in a 1-0 League Two defeat at Wycombe, but that was his only red card in a quiet opening season which included an average of just two yellow cards per game.

There was just one Championship game in that first season. It came at Ashton Gate with Bristol City’s 2-1 win against Ipswich, a game that featured our current captain Tom Heaton for the home side and former Burnley loan player Bradley Orr for the visitors.

He’s become a little busier with his cards in the last couple of seasons and this season, in 25 games, there have been 25 yellow cards and four red cards, the last of those reds being Kay’s last month. Of those yellow cards, 27 have gone to home team players and 34 to away team players.

It’s still mostly the two lower divisions for him and tomorrow will be just his seventh in the Championship. His last two games have been in League One, the most recent being Swindon’s 4-1 win at Colchester two weeks ago. There were no cards in that game.

Steve Martin is currently in sixth place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 77.34 out of 10.

The assistant referees are Glen Hart (County Durham) and Christopher Akers (South Yorkshire). The fourth official is Football League referee Peter Bankes (Merseyside) who has refereed our game at Rotherham and the home game against Ipswich this season.
