Looking for a second win of the week, the under-21s fell 2-0 behind in the first half this afternoon at Crewe but recovered sensationally in the second half to win 4-2 with Vernon Masara (pictured) scoring a hat-trick.

It was a difficult start for us. We fell behind to a Calum Agius goal in only the seventh minute with the same player doubling Crewe’s advantage midway through the half. The score remained 2-0 to Crewe through to half time and the opening minutes of the second half before we fought our way back into the game when right-back Alex Healy-Byrne latched on to a blocked shot from half time substitute Masara to pull one back.

After that it was all about 16-year-old Masara. He scored his first, and our equaliser, midway through the half with a powerful shot and then gave us the lead eight minutes time when he shot into the bottom corner having found himself one-on-one with the Crewe goalkeeper Mikolaj Lenarcik.

With not much over a minute remaining, he went on a long run to score again and complete his hat-trick and ensure a 4-2 victory for the Clarets.

The teams were;

Crewe: Mikolaj Lenarcik, Lewis Billington, Lucas Sant, Lewis Nolan, Trialist A, Trialist B, Rhys Allport (Will Perry 60), Luca Moore (Jack Parry 81), Max Woodcock, Charlie Finney (Stan Dancey 66), Calum Agius. Subs not used: Pharrell Williams, Muhamed Jatta.
