Mason in charge at the King Power
Burnley’s opening Premier League game this evening against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium will be refereed by Lee Mason, and that’s a name that still makes Burnley fans shudder.
That all goes back to his first ever Burnley game which is approaching twelve years ago now. That was the day he missed the blatant handball on the line when bottom of the league Preston came and took all three points on the day we finished with nine men with both Chris McCann and Guðjónsson sent off.
We haven’t seen much of him in recent seasons. This will be just his seventh Burnley game since we last won promotion in 2016 and in the last two seasons he’s refereed us just once, that was early last season when we drew 2-2 at Aston Villa.
While it will be our first league game of the season, it will be Mason’s first game. Last season he refereed a total of 26 games in league and cup with just a couple of them at Football League level, both in the Championship and in those games he handed out 80 yellow cards and just one red card.
Of those yellow cards, 36 were shown to home team players and 39 to away team players; the other five came in the League Cup final at Wembley. His only red card was for Sheffield United’s Billy Sharp in their 1-0 home defeat against Southampton in September last year.
This evenings fourth official is Darren England while Andy Madley will be on VAR duty. Newly promoted England refereed our League Cup defeat against Sunderland last season and had a shocking night. Madley was referee at Newcastle, the last time we played an away game before the league was shutdown last season.
