Last week, on the final day of the transfer window, I reported the moves of two former Burnley midfielders, those of Nathaniel Chalobah to West Bromwich Albion and Kevin McDonald to Exeter City.

Both made debuts for their new clubs last Saturday and they were joined by former Burnley captain Chris McCann who came on as a substitute for Terry Taylor early in Burton Albion’s 3-2 win at Fleetwood, a result that lifted them out of the relegation places.

McCann had been training with Burton for several weeks following the end of his contract at Shamrock Rovers for whom he’d played in the Champions League and the Europa Conference League. They announced his signing on a deal to the end of the season just ahead of the Fleetwood game.

Brewers boss Dino Maamria said: “First and foremost, Chris is a quality player who has been training with us over the last four or five weeks. I had Chris at Oldham and he’s done brilliantly for me. His pedigree is class and he’s played at a high level. He’s left footed as well. We’re delighted to have him on boar and hopefully he can push us up the table.”

McCann said: “I’ve been training here and got to know the lads well over the period of time I’ve been here. Once my deal ended in Ireland, I came over and asked Dino if he’d be interested in getting me into training just to keep me ticking over. Obviously that culminated in him offering me something which I’m delighted about.”

Chris came through the youth team at Burnley and made his debut in the first team in a 4-0 home win against Coventry in August 2005, coming on in the 12th minute for Wade Elliott. He went on to play 268 games for us and scoring 31 goals; the last of his appearances was on the final day of the 2012/13 season, a 2-0 home win against Coventry. He scored five times that season and his final Burnley goal was in a 3-1 home win against Bristol City, scoring the second past future Claret Tom Heaton as we came from behind to win.

He’s since played in England for Wigan, Coventry and Oldham. He’s also played in the MLS and has been with Shamrock for the past two years. His final appearance for Shamrock was a 1-1 home draw in the Europa Conference League against Gent in October of last year.
