The under-18s have beaten Sunderland 4-0 earlier this afternoon to record our sixth U18 Premier League win of the season while also completing a double over the Mackems.

Michael Mellon was the hat trick hero, scoring all but the third goal in what was just his second game back having been out of the team for over three months with a shoulder injury. Prior to today’s game his one goal this season had come in the 3-1 win at the Academy of Light back in October when we beat Sunderland 3-1.

With a young team of just three second year scholars, we went in front nine minutes before half time when Mellon slotted home having been played in by Dan Sassi and in first half stoppage time he doubled our advantage with a close range finish having been found by Tremaine Eastmond.

Mellon, whose dad Mickey signed for Burnley in January 1999, turned provider for number three just past the hour when he set up Jacob Hamilton who made it two goals in two games having scored his first last week in the defeat at Blackburn.

But Mellon had the final word, scoring his third goal when he received a pass from Keelan Williams to complete the  scoring four minutes from the end and becoming the second player to score a hat trick for us in this league following on from Sam Unwin who netted all three in a 3-2 win against Leeds.

The Burnley team was: Sam Waller, Keelan Williams, Dan Sassi, Benn Ward, FInlay Armstrong, Kade Ratchford (Ruairi Behan 82), Dylan Moonan (Will Hugill 38), Will Couch, Jacob Hamilton (George Walters 72), Michael Mellon, Tremaine Eastmond. Subs not used: Dane McCullough, Joe Smyth-Ferguson.
