With all respect to Salisbury, it’s a shame they didn’t draw a bigger team after the slog of all the qualifying rounds.

Re: ARTICLE: Our greatest goalscorer Willie Irvine dies
Such very sad news. Willie was my boyhood hero, and the reason why I’ve supported Burnley all my life. As a young boy in Berlin in the 1960’s, where my father was serving with 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, I played for a team coached by Joe Irvine, Willie’s brother. Joe was in the same...

As for old wives’ tales I remember from my childhood in Ireland, the one that seemed oddest was that if you put a new pair of shoes on the table it would bring you bad luck. Still don’t do it ( although I’ve had my share of bad luck, like us all)

Nah. Cyanide (like arsenic) in these tiny doses isn't going to do anything. Just like there is a trace amount of alcohol in every ripe banana but nobody ever got drunk eating 'nanas. There are some dangers, for example peach or apricot seeds are high enough in cyanide to be extremely dangerous. Or ...

Scoop, by Evelyn Waugh. It’s a while since I last read it, but I remember a wickedly funny satire relating to an occasional nature correspondent who is mistaken for a war correspondent, and sent off to cover a revolution in Abyssinia ( yes, it was written a long time ago) It is based on Waughs own e...

I’d forget any comparisons with the signings of either Wright or Gascoigne. Gascoigne was washed up when we signed him, was four years out of the England squad and wasn’t wanted by new Everton manager David Moyes for obvious reasons. He offered us nothing. Wright was a huge success but as much beca...

Risk of it being a gascoigne-esque signing. Err really? This guy was playing for England last month. Pretty hard stretch to compare him to a completely drink addled gazza. I share Tribesmen’s uncertainty. He is 35 - relatively old for a high tempo game, as so many are likely to be next season. I don’t think Pep would have fallen out with him if Pep felt KW still had a major contribution to make to Citeh. And Milan didn’t seem keen to hold on to him. He has been an exc...

I have to disagree with that. What Trafford did was gamesmanship, getting into the mind of the player taking the penalty - he didn’t move the ball further away or make the goal smaller. What the player did last night was cheating because he got an advantage by moving the ball away from the wall. Tr...
