Re: Internationals 23-3-24
There was a lot wrong with the earlier offside law. Whether a player in an offside position was interfering with play was entirely down to the opinion of the referee! Just take a look at the England v Portugal semi final in 1966, for both of Charlton’s goals, Roger Hunt was stood in an offside posit...

It’s like a player attempting a tackle but missing the ball and tripping the opponent, the act of making the tackle is deliberate but the act of missing the ball is accidental., but it’s a foul. Most trips occur when a defender attempts to play the ball but the opponent shifts the ball before he get...

I remember Steve McMahon doing the same thing years ago in division 1, playing for Liverpool.
The game was on match of the day and while it was suggested that technically it should have been a penalty it was not ‘in the spirit of the law’.

Not an answer to the exact question 2, but similar.
In 1965/66 in the old division1 a team beat Northampton 6 - 1 and finished bottom with only 20 points.
Don’t want to mention the name of the team but they did lose 3 - 1 today

Everton were promoted to division 1 in 1953/54, the first season I have clear memories of. They were runners up to Leicester, who were the closest top flight team to where I lived at that time. Everton finished just one point ahead of Blackburn, who were not promoted.
