Like Malvern Claret, it was the 1966 World Cup Final.
Will we ever win it again ?

Re: REPORT: Magnificent in Manchester
I was also at that League Cup game in the 60's.
I recall the headline for effect suggesting Best had crossed for Law with his stocking foot, but not the case. A hard defeat to take at the time even if United were a very good side.

Re: The Keirby
On "emigrating " to Hampshire in 1982, I registered with a local dentist named Kierby. Having established I was from Burnley, he informed me his family had owned the main hotel in the town. A surprise for me then, and I'm sure a surprise for him if he saw the building now.

Re: ARTICLE: Jimmy Robson played his cards right
Good to read these articles, Tony. Kids going on the Turf today will reminisce in many years time on "Up the Clarets" or some other guise, whatever that will be. They will enthuse over Zaroury, Benson and Tella. In my day it was Mac, Pointer, Connelly and Robson. Like Tony, I stood outside the old B...

Re: ARTICLE: Our greatest ever goalscorer
Was that goal in the 2-0 win over Liverpool the same game Ralph Coates got the second with that superb solo run ? Willie was one of my favourite players only behind Brian O'Neil. Once he retired I had the good fortune to play alongside him in a lunchtime five a side league at the Thompson Centre.Tur...

One more. Aged 71, born in Burnley.
First game I recall being in the old Brunshaw Rd stand but first memory was the F A Cup semi final v Spurs in 1961 at Villa Park. Last game at Bristol last Saturday.
My enthusiasm doesn't wane.

Ah the lunchtime five a side league was brilliant, very competitive, the brainchild of the lovely Gerald Thompson I believe. We also used to adjourn to the Cattle Market for pie and peas I’m sure we only played on Fridays??? I played for the Burnley Express who did you play for? Remember the luncht...

Re: 1966 World Cup Final England v West Germany
I too was at the match, practically on line with the infamous Russian linesman. 54 years ago ! Remember seeing the match in a film called "Goal " many years ago in colour. This is the first time I've seen the whole game since July 66. Surprised not to see Bobby Charlton featured in this programme alo...

Sorry for Burnley fans.
Read posts on the Watford forum feeling sorry for Burnley fans having to regularly watch our style of "anti-football" play. Possibly a knee jerk reaction to their defeat, but they are still trying to find a style of their own, changing managers regularly. There are two scenarios. One, we try to play...

Re: First World Cup memories
Aged 14, the 1966 World Cup was my first real memory. I was lucky to see most of the matches at Goodison and Old Trafford in the North West group. The opportunity to see Brazil and Pele live, albeit a sad figure after the treatment he got. Like CT, I saw the Brazil - Hungary game which today is one o...

A contrast to nearly a hundred years ago when a team called Dick Kerr's Ladies played charity games at Deepdale,Old Trafford,Anfield and at Goodison where 53000 turned up and 10000 locked out ! They also played at Burnley Cricket Club ground !!

Hi C and B 94. Be pleased to give you some recommendations on Bali, but it may help to know if you are with a young or older family, or with friends and what your interests are. Bali has plenty of outdoor activities- surfing, rafting, water sports, diving etc where I have contacts. You may prefer th...

OK. Thanks. I should have known that. For years I thought I was born in Burnley, until I researched the family tree and found I was registered in Nelson !bobinho wrote:Smelly nelly. Nelson.

There is also a very steep one in colne. Newmarket street I think???

Once worked with his wife, Liz, and was invited to join them for the weekend Wales played England at Ninian Park . Brian was in the Welsh side. Stayed at the Wales team hotel and sat amongst Brian's family at the game. Great hospitality which made it more difficult to celebrate an England 1-0 win ! ...

Living in Hampshire at the time I remember taking one of my sons to the Dell when Saints played Arsenal. Bergkamp was also one of my favourite players and I told him to watch him particularly. He didn't disappoint and scored two good goals. One he got at Filbert Street was class.

Re: Tommy Gemmell RIP
Enola, that's the one I remembered. However the other game I now recall was Racing v Celtic, the Battle of Montivideo. There is a clip of Gemmell, but in this case he kicks an opponent where it hurts on the blind side of the officials. Men really were men in those days and Celtic had many players wh...

Re: Who do you think will go down
At this stage I'd say Sunderland, Boro and Palace.Big Sam seems deflated after the England debacle but if he can raise his Palace side like he did at Sunderland then Hull could drop. Just feel Leicester, Bournemouth and Swansea will pick up the necessary points.

Re: Tommy Gemmell RIP
I seem to recall Celtic playing in a World Club Championship one off game in South America following their European success. Maybe against Estudiantes. Anyway it was a battle with players kicking each other all over the pitch. One of the funniest scenes I have seen on a pitch was Gemmell chasing a f...

Re: Who do you want to promote from the Championship?
Newcastle. Always a good away venue.
Huddersfield, because as has been said, they are similar to our club.
Sheffield Wed, because a friend who is a fan and the city of Sheffield needs a Premier club.
All close for away matches.

I expect defeats against Chelsea, Hull and Liverpool, but draws at Swansea and Sunderland and at home to Spurs. Having said that we are due an away win and hopefully Spurs will go the same way as Everton and Liverpool.

I wouldn't change it. Top 2 you know you are up. The season is alive for most clubs be it promotion, play-offs or relegation issues right up to the last few games. 6th position gives you a chance of promotion albeit you play the 3rd and have the away game second. Didn't we go up from 6th recently ? ...

Re: Who will go down ?
On reviewing the fixtures of all the sides below us before last weekend, I predict that Sunderland,Boro and Palace will go down. They have more difficult run ins, although Leicester will need to put a break on their slide quickly. Hull and Swansea look as though a new manager MIGHT get them clear. A...
