Listening to our local BBC radio station. just heard a recording of a eight year old wanting to buy ice-cream cones for herself and her twin sister from an ice-cream van in Burnley. £9 for two cones, and they only take cards. Wanted to pay by cash. Therefore no ice-cream and clearly not happy!

Only 14 months old at the time, so have no personal memories. But it’s one of those events that you ask “where were you when..”. My Dad was at work, but remember asking my Mum. She was making tea, listening to the radio, and said how shocked she was to hear the announcement.

He goes in basically close to where the Bob Lord turnstiles are now (the ones closest to the cricket field end). When it shows them training, they are inside the ground behind the Bee Hole end so basically in what is now the car park, leading round to the fanzone. Just had another look at the film....

The “Culvert” dates from 1796, but rebuilt over the years to cope with increasing traffic. Strictly speaking it’s an aqueduct, but perhaps it was named The Culvert as a joke, which stuck. Rather than water it allowed traffic to pass under the canal.
