LinkedIn phishing ???
Has anyone any experience of phishing messages thru LinkedIn?
I rec'd a LinkedIn message early from a guy I worked with over 10 years ago. We both moved on to other employers and it is several years since we've been in contact. The message just said "Hi.... based on your profile.... we have a project.... your skills/experience match.... respond quickly.... job details in attachment...." So, nothing about the two of us knowing each other. Nothing about "what are you doing now." And, an obvious spelling mistake... So, very much the typical profile of a phishing message.
My "phishing warning lights" are flashing - so, I haven't opened the attachment which was accessible via OneDrive.
I retired earlier this year. I'm not looking for work. If I had been looking for work I might not have hesitated...
Anyone else had these experiences with LinkedIn? Are scammers now able to associate a LinkedIn members user name with their scam message?
PS: I'm unsure whether this thread complies with the new "Temporary changes..." I've checked the forbidden subjects and this is not one of the ones listed.

Re: LinkedIn phishing ???
Yep. But I get them from lots of sites, not just LinkedIn. You can always tell a phishing mail from a genuine one. And of course, for anybody reading this who is unsure, there are certain things you can do such as hovering the mouse over any link and see where it takes you. You'll often see they have used the sub domain, such as linkedin.randomword.com

Re: LinkedIn phishing ???
I get plagued by emails etc offering me projects etc your ex colleagues account has possibly been compromised and everyone in his linked-in address book will be getting similar.
If you run you mr mouse over the contacts name you will probably find a different email address hidden underneath.
I also get plagued by "so-called" payment invoices from email addresses in the usa all ending with .edu .... scammers one and all....
Like Frank I treat everything as a scam and block and/or delete after reporting junk/phishing scams.
Stay safe treat everything as a scam

Re: LinkedIn phishing ???
I've received messages from them asking me to congratulate certain ex colleagues on anniversaries with a certain companies. One of the people is dead and the other left the company a looong time ago. I don't particularly like the site TBH and their records are hopeless.

Re: LinkedIn phishing ???
To be fair, CaptJohn, all the personal details on the site are maintained by the individual. Yes, it does work on the "congratulate X" for new job, birthday, work anniversary etc. I know a few people who haven't updated their employment records for some time and, one or two, I'm aware of being "economical with the facts" around their employment and not-in-employment dates. (I'm sure potential employers do their own due diligence).CaptJohn wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 12:43 pmI've received messages from them asking me to congratulate certain ex colleagues on anniversaries with a certain companies. I first went on the site towards the end of 2010. I got a call from a head hunter Jan-2011 - placed me in a great job for the next several years up to retirement. It's a good way of staying in touch with those that you are happy to, without needing to give them all your personal email address.

Re: LinkedIn phishing ???
Thanks, Bosscat. It was a LinkedIn Message rather than email that I rec'd - that only links to the user's profile. If they've included an email address that is separate on their profile.Bosscat wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 12:39 pmI get plagued by emails etc offering me projects etc your ex colleagues account has possibly been compromised and everyone in his linked-in address book will be getting similar.

Interestingly, I've just now gone back to the LinkedIn message - and when I click on the link I get the message "profile not available." So, looks like LinkedIn has been alerted and is doing something about it.

Re: LinkedIn phishing ???
I received an e-mail from LinkedIn yesterday telling me I'd featured in 3 searches and to click on the link to see who it was.
I was quite surprised as I don't actually have a LinkedIn account

A LinkedIn contact is like a Readers' Digest subscription - it'll be with you for ever.

Re: LinkedIn phishing ???
I’ve had a fair few. I am in there a lot for work. My 2 all time classics are
1. You have been chosen to join the Ilummanti - to which the wife say WHY you they choose YOU
2. My Chinese company is looking to invest in your company. We’re open on the DAX
As with all things if you don’t know them don’t open it. Be sensible as the scams are getting more and more difficult to spot

Re: LinkedIn phishing ???
My ex-colleague has messaged me today. Yes, he'd been hacked. All now sorted and his account restored.
