Re: chess puzzle
I just ran the scenario through a high level of stockfish (wasn't going to reveal the answer) and it played Rook E3 resulting in mate in 3 (it defended with the Bishop) so I'm suspicious of there being an answer but wouldn't dismiss there being so crafty and wired move that works

When you say 'in 3', you mean the white had 3 moves?Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 3:45 pmI just ran the scenario through a high level of stockfish (wasn't going to reveal the answer) and it played Rook E3 resulting in mate in 3 (it defended with the Bishop) so I'm suspicious of there being an answer but wouldn't dismiss there being so crafty and wired move that works

Maybe it is 3 moves and not 2.

If that is the case that would be extremely annoying as 3 moves by white and 2 moves by black changes the game completelyFactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 3:49 pmWhen you say 'in 3', you mean the white had 3 moves?

Yes White had 3 moves. It could be the computer is just following a simple mating method as it's not trying specifically to do in 2 moves like usFactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 3:49 pmWhen you say 'in 3', you mean the white had 3 moves?

There could be a random play that the computer doesn't bother to look at cos the mate in 3 is so simple

Each possibility had the White needing 3 moves.

I think unless the OP is given the answer I'm going with it needing 3 moves. Quite possibly why the OP was never given the answer.

The black king has to move out of check before H1- E4 can put the white king in check. It does not and is therefore the check mate for the white remains.

Same mate
Re: chess puzzle
I’ve played out white mate in 2 moves in a few combinations, but it depends on black making a mistake, so it’s not guaranteed to be mate in 2 but possible. Guaranteed mate in 3 though

There's no easy way to say this...I've had an update and the picture I had was incorrect. The white knight was in the incorrect place. I know, I deserve to be banned for the pain caused. Any consolation might be the amount of time I've spent on this which I can't think about. Anyway, this is the one. I still can't do it!

Re: chess puzzle
Knight b3-d4
King can only move e5-d6 followed by White Queen f7-e7 mate
If King doesnt move then White is threatening Queen f7 to e7 or f7-e6 mate
Black can try and defend with moving Bishop H1 to D5 so they can block on e6 but if they make this move white can take bishop with Queen so Queen f7 to d5
All possible solutions
Move 1: White Knight B3-D4
Move 2a: Black Bishop H1-D5
Move 3a: White Queen takes Bishop F7-D5 mate
Move 2b: Black Pawn E7-E6
Move 3b: White Queen take Pawn F7-E6 mate
Move2c: Black King E5-D6
Move 3C: Queen F7-E7 mate
Move 2d: Any other move by Black
Move 3d: White Queen F7-E6 Mate
Somebody please check and see if ive missed owt

Re: chess puzzle
White Bishop B7-E4
White plans to move Queen from F7-E7 to mate
Black has two defensive moves to cover E7 - either Rook D4 to E4 or Bishop B8-D6
For both these moves White can then move Queen F7-F5 mate
On the original version with the White Knight on the other Square Black could have played Rook D4-C4 making D4 an escape route for the King but now with the Knight on B3 then D4 is coverev
SuperTeds please put me out of my misery and let me know if ive missed something else this time

Re: chess puzzle
I think the first move is either (a) make the white rook take the black rook - it doesn't put the King in check, but not sure it can move anywhere?... or (b) move the bishop from the top left down to the King.
Not convinced you check the King on your first move, you instead make it so the King can't move anywhere, and the black can only move one of the other pieces. Regardless of which piece it is, the white can then checkmate with the Queen.

Re: chess puzzle
If anything this has been good banter with some like-minded sound folk.
I'm sure the first move isn't a check, though. It's a move that stops the King from moving anywhere on the Black's move.
