How high can we finish realistically

Post by tiger76 » Thu Jan 28, 2021 9:16 pm

So now we are moving up the table slowly, how far up can we ultimately get, top 10 is still a big ask, but we're only 4 points shy of Leeds, and we seem to have found our mojo once again, so that should be our first target, and then see where it takes us after that.

And this uplift in form will hopefully persuade Sean to treat the FA Cup as a priority, because who knows just maybe this could be our year at long last. :)

Aim for 10th and see how we go.

I'd settle for 17th and a cup final tbh.

As long as the cup final is not against Man City - i think it would be more Watford than Wigan

Four more wins and one or two draws will see us safe, then crack on and get as many points as we can.

I'd say 12th/13th is feasible.

Phil McNulty the BBC football writer has us to finish 16th thats ok but he also reckons the Blades will be safe and sound with Palace facing the drop

The sky's the limit if we can carry on
and get the same results as we have done over the last 12 or so games.
On that basis we could finish with 45 or more points and close to a top ten finish.
I think in reality that could be a little optimistic and I'd be happy
with 38-40 points and 12/13th.

In fact I'd be happy with 17th and a good cup run too.

But as long as we equal or better Fulhams' results I'd still be happy.

But a biggish rebuild job over the summer.

Hard to say but had Ben Mee not been injured at start of the season we'd probably be 1st or 2nd at moment and pretty much guaranteed a top 4 finish

I'd settle for dropping a place or two in the league if it meant a cup win, the prominence a major trophy would bring to the club would be immense, and really put us on the football map, yes the PL seasons have been great, but we haven't yet made that next step to competing for honours, and we might not get a better chance for a good few seasons, a lot of the other teams in the last 16 are either still in Europe, fighting for the title, or battling relegation, so they may have to juggle their squads with that in mind, and if we can get past Bournemouth, and pick up a result or two in the next few league games, we could be pretty much safe by the time the 6th round rolls around, and able to have a real go at the cup, apart from City we shouldn't fear anyone left in the draw, we've already shown this season that we can beat the bigger teams, or at least run them very close.

Yep! I was hoping Duffer was going to do us a huge favour, and he came very close, sadly City squeezed through in the end alas.

I’ll go for 12th.

Would be delighted with that given our start and would help us attract players in the summer to be well above the relegation battle.

Can change every game though - could get a thumping against Chelsea and we’re all looking over our shoulders again.

I think we'll stay above the teams currently below us, may catch one or two of those just above - Palace most likely.

13/14th & no end of season nail biting after the start we had would be very decent. Another couple of rounds in the FA Cup would be additional satisfaction & excitement.
Another few points gained against entitled fans of big (so they think) clubs would be grand, it's a great joy to hear them scrike.

I'd echo Leadbelly, sounds an ideal aim. I would though swop Palace for Leeds.

As has been said earlier, I would settle for a comfortable 17th position finish with only our usual end of season 'holiday' performances dropping us that low and a group stage entry into the Europa League thanks to winning the FA Cup.

I think the table will be grouped as follow:

The usual top six plus Everton & Leicester,

Then Villa, Southampton & West Ham.

Ourselves, Wolves, Palace & Leeds.

Then the bottom five that are currently there, with the bottom three being the ones that will be relegated.

However, I think with a good run we can catch one of Southampton or Villa.

I’m still more bothered about the other end.
At the moment the bottom 3 are all under 50 points, on the magic numbers thread.
10 defeats apiece for them, highly likely at current pace, would see us needing 20 points to guarantee safety. Hopefully less. We seem to finish stronger most seasons under SD so should be ok but a couple of key injuries could see us sweating.

There is no chance of needing 42 points to stay up. We will be fine

This season, top 10. Next season and beyond - 1st. It has to be the aim every season otherwise you lower your standards and when 1st becomes matematically impossible - scale down accordingly. As a whole though top 10 should be the aim.

The bottom 3 can't put wins on the board, they only have 6 wins between them, so unless we go on a Newcastle type slump, which although always possible is unlikely, then we'll be fine, stop being a worrywart. :) plus the bottom 3 will face each other on several occasions over the rest of the season, so they will probably take points off each other, I'd actually say Newcastle, Palace & Wolves are more at risk of being sucked into the relegation scrap than us, that trio are all on hideous runs of form, whereas we've been playing well for a couple of months now, and even when we're not at our best we can dig results out, that's why we'll be fine for another season.

15th or anything above would be fantastic. I think this season there are too many clubs above us capable of beating each other for us to get much higher than we are. There will be many ups and downs this season from a number of clubs. Thankfully we have SD at the helm to steady the ship

If any of the current bottom 3 are going to pull off the great escape I'd fancy Fulham to be the ones to mount a survival bid, they've improved immensely since their first few games, and they are keeping clean sheets and becoming much harder to beat now, their problem is turning these draws into wins, if they can start doing that then Newcastle should be very worried, and I wouldn't rule Brighton out just yet either, a lot of the other teams around us have been on dreadful runs, however they've still got a decent buffer between themselves and the bottom 3, and surely they'll have to start picking up soon won't they.

14th-15th, unless we strengthen injury to key players such as Mee could really stretch us though.
