I believe he was offered a deal at Stamford Bridge but didn't take it up.

Pleased to see us bringing new talent in, even if he is only in the development squad just now, who knows in 12/18 months he might be Dwight's replacement, when Dwight moves on for big money, this is how we have to operate, and all the signs on the youth side of things are pointing very much in the right direction, with both results, and players knocking on the door of the first team squad, that's a massive improvement from even a couple of seasons ago, when we couldn't buy results at this level, even against the smaller clubs, and now both the u23's, and the u18's are showing huge promise.

Getting rid of the wrong people and then moving up from Cat 3 to 2 to 1 is making a hell of a difference. Still a long way to go but we are improving so much at this level year by year.

Would you say the board, MG & JB, or SD were the driving force behind the massive improvement in age group football?

Yes and for all the talk of big money signings, it's the youth system we really need to function well, because ultimately that's where some of our future stars will emerge from, and if we can produce 1 or 2 more in the mould of Dwight, and they make an impact in the PL, then we'll not only save ourselves from forking out large transfer fees and paying millions to agents, we'll also hopefully be able to sell some on for top dollar, the reality is we'll always be a selling club, no matter what level we're competing at, but the difference is now the bigger clubs are courting our players, hence why we've made huge profits on the likes of Keane among others in recent seasons, and there's also been interest in McNeil & Tarks, personally I'm happy that other clubs are eyeing up our players, because this means they're doing well, and ultimately it means the academy pays for itself.

I’d say it was SD who had worked at Watford who had done really well academy wise. The academy was in a mess and when Dave Baldwin came in he reviewed it and it was basically get it up to Cat 2 or shut it down. That’s when we got new people in and started to move it forward.

The academy had been move away from Gawthorpe in 2011/12 and based in the gym building at the Turf. Dyche wanted it all back in one place which we’ve got now.

He’s not responsible but I reckon he has a lot of input into it. So he’s been a major factor in us moving it forward.

It’s great that some of our players are being eyed up by bigger clubs. It’s worth remembering though that of the two mentioned, Tarkowski was an experienced pro and was brought in to affect the first team (gradually bedded in). We seem to be ignoring the here and now.

I’d love to see a conveyor belt of quality youngsters coming through the youth system to the first team, that’s some task though and we are probably a long way off any real benefits from all of the good work to date.

That’s why, the likes of Collins and Knight would have been ideal targets (I’m surmising that we thought both would have a good chance of making the first team fairly quickly, as with Tarkowski).

It’s disappointing that we’ve not strengthened in our less well stocked areas with signings that will improve the first eleven now or in the near future, providing valuable back up in the interim.

We are yet again taking big risks and kicking the can even further down the road - that can must be half way across Europe by now.

Quality youth is going to be important for us but let’s not forget that in the meantime, the first eleven hasn’t had any proper investment in it for far too long.

There's a lot of hope on the Academy and producing a conveyor belt of first teamers but which club in the world really does produce enough players to keep a first team going? In Italy, Atalanta & Sassuolo have good reputations but in English football I've no idea.
Our future is buying good players ready to step up to become excellent ones, ala Tarks, Pope, JBG, Keane, Tripps, etc etc.

So Dara has taken a great jump i must say .
Kind of a bit player at United i do recall seeing him a couple of times coming on as a sub bags of pace and very busy .
For me he used to drift onto the wing quite a bit and tended to to do too much , kind of beat one player then look to take someone else on . Looked very lightweigh as he was only young .
Everyone in Galway are very pleased for him and hopes he does well .
