They behaved like Bolton fans for years, loving having their owner continue to poor money into the club to inflate their league position, constantly finding ways to dodge FFP and stick 2 fingers up to the EFL etc.
Didnt the sponsors pay for rooney?jedi_master wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 9:07 pmA year ago they must have known their position if they didn’t get promoted.
It didn’t stop them hiring Philip Cocu, signing that Polish lad for millions along with Jordon Ibe on significant money and, oh, Wayne Rooney!!!
They have reaped what they have sown with this, it’s been coming years. Overspending since 2013 and nothing to show for it.
Recall reading their message board after our interest in Knight was rumoured in the press and they were calling us a tinpot club
No. Some fans may have behaved that way, but equally, there will have been plenty who, as on here, offered a word of caution.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 9:22 pmThey behaved like Bolton fans for years, loving having their owner continue to poor money into the club to inflate their league position, constantly finding ways to dodge FFP and stick 2 fingers up to the EFL etc.
Now they're weeping and wailing on social media, but they're ignoring their past attitudes and behaviour, just like Bolton fans.
This is tarring with the same brush. Surprise, surprise a minority of supporters are knobs on social media. No different from any club including ours.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 9:22 pmThey behaved like Bolton fans for years, loving having their owner continue to poor money into the club to inflate their league position, constantly finding ways to dodge FFP and stick 2 fingers up to the EFL etc.

They all sat by and watched Mel circumvent the FFP rules, there were no protests when the money was being poured into the club and then thrown around in the transfer market and on an unaffordable wage bill which was running at approx 140%
It’s possible it still could in the future, things can go sh1tshaped at any club with mismanagement, generally speaking the fans won’t be to blame some of the decisions made were nothing to do with them.PadihamThickNeck wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 10:54 pmDon’t like to see this happen to any club regardless of the past (we basically have no past with them).
Dont forgot not so long ago this could of been us.
Got to agree. Fans are sometimes their own worst enemy. Portsmouth the same. Celebrated winning a FA Cup that they couldn’t afford, then played the “it’s not the fans fault” when it all went tits up.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 9:22 pmThey behaved like Bolton fans for years, loving having their owner continue to poor money into the club to inflate their league position, constantly finding ways to dodge FFP and stick 2 fingers up to the EFL etc.

What tosh. What were Portsmouth fans supposed to do, not go to Wembley or boo the team for winning an FA cup? What's all this "they" chat to represent 10s of thousands of supporters. See it all the time on here, "hate (insert club) fans, 'they're' a bunch of wan*ers" or suchlike. What, all 25,000 of them? Remember when we spent above our means and just about got away with it? Don't remember anyone demonstrating outside the club to stop us spending money. I guarantee you wouldn't get many complaints if we started buying 30 million pound players in the summer either. Football supporters, and people generally, are pretty equal beasts. They love to see their team do well, and will turn a blind eye or understandably think their club is being run sustainably. That's when the term "they" works to generalise. We're not special, and other teams supporters aren't especially worse or better. I don't know what it is about football that reduces adults to childlike criticisms of other groups of people.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 2:09 amGot to agree. Bolton exactly the same. Spent way above their means, even trying to change the structure of the league to prevent the inevitable implosion when they got relegated or the “free” money ran out.
That’s why I don’t buy into this “I feel sorry for the fans”. They partied all night long thinking it was a free bar. Then sulked when the tab came in!
While this may be true in relation to the club and it's running of it, the sweeping generalisations about not giving a toss or the points about staying away as a mark of protest seem odd to me.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 12:25 amThey all sat by and watched Mel circumvent the FFP rules, there were no protests when the money was being poured into the club and then thrown around in the transfer market and on an unaffordable wage bill which was running at approx 140%
The only reason they made a profit one season was when they sold the ground....
Their attendances have generally averaged in the high 20k's, their ground has a 34k capacity, so they certainly haven't been staying away in protest.
Everyone knew they were living well beyond their means and as a group they've generally not given a toss, just the same as fans at other clubs haven't given a toss during the good times.
Now they're weeping and wailing, regurgitating the same crap we see from fans at other clubs when the house of cards collapses.
The warning signs have been there for a long time, they just chose to ignore them.
They must now deal with the consequences.
I don't want to see a club go out of business, but I'll certainly not spare any sympathy for a fanbase that reveled in a league position that was propped up by the club living beyond its means and offering higher wages than the club could afford to lure players in.
The EFL certainly needs to do something about the state of finances at its member clubs, because Derby isn't the only one running at a massive loss and there will be other clubs getting nervously close to the edge of the precipice.
Another season long Covid lockdown would be devastating in the EFL.
It is quite funny especially when the fans wouldn’t even have known.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 8:06 amHave to laugh at fans suggesting they should have been protesting when their club spent money they didn’t haveWhat planet are you on

Oh they knew, they made claims that Mel had the EFL on strings.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 10:00 amIt is quite funny especially when the fans wouldn’t even have known.

Remember the protests?
The average working class fan who works all week & goes to football don’t usually get themselves in boardroom politics, perhaps a small number were suspicious the club were spending money it didn’t have they could have closed ranks & got the rest of them onboard waging a crusadeGodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 10:05 amOh they knew, they made claims that Mel had the EFL on strings.

Ok, we can use the example of Utd fans not being happy with the way the takeover was financed etc so they went off and formed a new club to follow instead, FC United of Manchester.
There’s another club I use to admire, Manchester City. But they and their fans have become one of the worst in the country. They’ve circumnavigated FFP for years now. They’ve dodged inquires by doing nothing. Their fans even saying if uefa continue to go after them, they’ll just throw money after money at lawyers just to stall until uefa are bankrupt, and their fans just lap it up, so yes, I’ll criticise other (groups of people) clubs supporters when in my opinion I feel it warranted.willsclarets wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 7:18 amWhat tosh. Bolton and Blackburn were undoubtedly kept in unrealistic inflated positions but Derby havent been in the Premier League for 13 yearsGodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 10:28 amOk, we can use the example of Utd fans not being happy with the way the takeover was financed etc so they went off and formed a new club to follow instead, FC United of Manchester.
Fans have a voice they can use if they wish.
When Rovers were taken over their fans were gloating about how they'd then be returned to their rightful position at the top of the PL, then when it became clear it wasn't going as they hoped, they started protesting and I'm pretty sure there wasn't much sympathy on here for them.
It would appear it's fine to revel in the collapse of Rovers, or even Bolton, but not when it's Derby when all 3 have enjoyed an inflated league position due to their owners?
