Because he's a media pick as are most of Southgate's squad, nothing to do with actual ability just alleged ability.
Southgate must be an amazing manager to achieve what he has with a squad of media picks.

Considering the opposition we have in this terrible qualifying group ,most of the forum could probably do a job at centre hand If needed

If it is so easy RV how come it very rarely happens.
Being a CB left or right isn’t about their feet. It’s about the overall skill set. You don’t have to be dominant footed to be good at your role.

Newcastle once again dragging it into a cul de sac argument.

I have said it’s about the position? Still waiting for someone to name a better LCB that could take his squad position

What about the one who has replaced him in Villa's team?

They conceded 4 and he was lucky not to get sent off. I don't think you can say he's definitively a better option.

I think we can all agree we have a shortcoming in left footed centre backs or English centre backs who currently play on the left side.

Whether that dictates that the horrifically out of form Mings and Maguire should start ahead of other CB's who could play CB is a different question.

That’s the point I was making, why would we play a CB out of position when Maguire and in this case Mings have both been excellent for England

Because they have been poor for their clubs, recently. Equally, john Stones has been suspect for England but still gets a call up.

Pope has conceded one goal for England in seven, which would suggest he has been excellent for England and has now been dropped., rightly so because his club form has dropped recently.

I don't think it's unreasonable for fans to be a little confused by Southgates selections.

Mings and Maguire have gone through a rough spell but both are best LCB England have available.

Let’s be honest there we no surprising selections. Southgate has picked the best squad available to him.

Tarkowski is normally pretty average when he has to move to the left. I was surprised how well he did this time compared to usual.
i think this says more about Nathan Collins TBH

I'd call not picking Tomori who is playing champions league and 2nd in Serie A a surprise over Mings who's been dropped from relegation chasing Villa, but hey ho.

I won't level at Southgate that he picks his favourites but I am disappointed that he abandoned his picking players in form mantra long ago.

By harping in about a LCB your saying it’s about the position, ya plank!

If you said name a better CB, then you’d be able to press your point.
