Ray Illingworth RIP

Post by ClaretTony » Sat Dec 25, 2021 1:49 pm

Lost his fight against cancer at the age of 89.

Yorkshireman maybe, but an outstanding cricketer for his county and England.

I saw an interview with him a week or so ago regarding assisted suicide. He'd lost his wife after a long battle with illness (cancer, I think) and he has also been suffering for a number of years.

RIP

My dad once played alongside him in a cobbled-up RAF side against a Army 11.

Good captain. Won the Ashes home and away.

Just seen this news, certainly up there with the top England captains of all time, and there can't be many who've won home & away Ashes series,

No messing with Ray…took the English players off the pitch when the Aussie spectators were throwing stuff at John Snow(my favourite fast bowler!) and led England to a ashes win.

My eldest brother shared a dressing room with Raymond at his beloved Farsley CC after he finished in the pro game, a typical forthright Yorkie he said.

RIP Raymond.

Best captain in my lifetime imo and I include Brearley in that. ... Yorkie or not...

Stopped and gave a lift in Wortley to a scruffy teenager hitching in the rain circa 1974..took him all the way to Rochdale bus station.

Cheers Ray. RIP.
