Gannow Top Motorway bridge .... M65 Junction 10

Post by Clarets4me » Thu Feb 03, 2022 3:08 pm

Allow some extra time for travel if you're planning to exit the M65 at Junction 10 for the next month, and specifically match days. The whole of Cavalry Way, which includes the roundabouts either side of the junction as well as the road-bridge over the Motorway are down to one lane to facilitate the replacement of the " ramparts " on the bridge. In addition, the whole road will be shut between 11.45 pm and 5 am each night, with no access on or off the M65 during this time.

This has been causing long queues all this week at busy times, although those of us who live locally are aware that sadly, this is a bridge that several people have tried to jump off over the past few years, the latest just a couple of weeks ago. It's good that the Council are doing something about the barriers, but I fear this will only transfer the problem to another area ... :(

You do wonder why we seem to take an age to do things in the UK, the cost of disruption must be huge.

They work at night when it's quiet.

The people paying for the work, whether this is UK Highways or council roads maintenance aren't the ones who pay for the disruption. That's why things take so long and are spun out...

I was in the States some years back. There was some work going on on a bridge over a road junction. The road was shut for a few hours. Construction work went on through the night. Part way through the next week all the work was complete and a new highway junction was in full use.

On the outer edge of London at present there's some work going on on the bridge over the Thames at Hampton Court. The work includes the installation of barriers to protect pedestrians in case a vehicle was driven along the pavements. Yes, unfortunately, necessary work these days. The work is advertised as taking 3 months, it started just over a week ago. I went past today about 2pm, one lane closed, leaving 2 lanes in one direction and 1 in the opposite direction. 5 workmen standing chatting, a couple of them leaning on brooms. No sign of any work going on....

Anyone who is in this sector throw any light on why it is like this?

I thought it was the canal bridge that people use to jump off, that’s where all the flowers are tied to the railings. Sadly.

Sadly, for the last couple of years, there have been notices fastened to the railings on the Junction 10 bridge, with Samaritans and other help-line numbers .....

Drives me mad, it’s hopeless though because who do you complain to, nobody cares, I can only assume the guy that signs it off rides to work on a bicycle.
Like you say, and I was going to say myself but was expecting some argumentative get to jump in, we are terrible at managing the condition of our roads. You can talk about council cuts but if we are taking 6 weeks to do a job that could be done in a few days, what do they expect.

Maintaining traffic flow seems to have gone out of fashion.
Many will remember the policeman on “Point duty” posted on match days at the Belvedere Road, Yorkshire Street crossroads.
We were getting crowds in the 5000’s and generally there was less cars.
Now we’re getting at least 3x the crowds and it’s a mess, pedestrians having to dodge cars. Cars stuck in long queues.
So much is spouted about clean air and congestion charging, yet we have loads of pointless, badly sequenced temporary traffic lights, together with long queues at slow never ending roadworks.

Totally agree with the sentiments expressed, instead of having a middling job here and a middling job there hit a job hard, flood it with staff and materials then move on, they'll all still be in work long term no need to drag each job on.

I believe that the LCC councillor for Burnley Central West under which Gannow is, is listed as Andy Fewings of the Green Party. 👍

The thing that has annoyed me is the amount of confusion they are causing with the cones at the roundabout. Going past Tim Bobbin into Burnley both lanes are open, once past the traffic lights, the outside lane is cut off forcing those in the right hand lane to take up the lane that should be there for those in the left lane, and those in the left lane cutting infront of others to get back in their own lane! **** up and brewery spring to mind. Still, as long as the budget is spent....

If you look at the new road markings painted on the road in both lanes it’s pretty straight forward!
Left lane for down Pendle way and M65 to Colne, right lane towards Burnley

From junction 9 into town past the crem is also a nightmare (or still was on Wednesday).
All that area was awful when they were doing the new junction/traffic lights at Rossendale
Road/Accrington Road, so why is it once again a mess in so short a time ? Although I believe
it is cleared at night.

The latest trick, that I found out on Tuesday night, is to allow you to travel up the road from
Shuttleworth Mead all the way to the roundabout to enter the motorway to head west towards
Blackburn, only to find that cones are set out to direct you away from the slip road, round the
roundabout where diversion signs were sending you back down to Shuttleworth Mead and through
Altham, Clayton le Moors to enter the motorway at J7 by The Dunkenhalgh.

Just let us know on the approach to Shuttleworth Mead that the motorway is closed in a westerly
direction you incompetent morons.

But it’s not though is it because I used the right lane, and you still get people cutting others up. It causes confusion.

It took 25 minutes this morning to get from the town centre onto the motorway.

Allow a little more time tomorrow around match time.

If you're coming from Clayton le Moors/ Rishton/ Great Harwood way, is there any advantage to going through Padiham (past Mullards) and joining Gannow Top roundabout at the Tim Bobbin?

Yes, although if coming from that way, I'd be a bit more cheeky and go down Lakeland way, along ighten Rd and back up Pendle Way, you'll get out quicker as the lights change you can nip out, also they'll be less car coming from down there, so queues far shorter 😉

Padiham & Burnley West ( Lancashire County Council ) May 2021 Elections

Hall, S ( Green ) 190
Hosker, A ( Conservative ) 2299
McCann, P ( Lib Dem ) 292
Townsend, M ( Labour ) 919

Whatever his foibles as a Referee, he's clearly doing something right as both a Borough & a County Councillor. In 2017, he won the above seat with a majority of 228, four years later, he retained his seat with a majority of 1,380. This was despite Labour putting up former Council Leader and ex-Mayor, Mark Townsend as their Candidate and devoting lots of resources to campaigning there ....

As you might expect, he rubs a few people up the wrong way, but as I know from experience, he works like stink and gets things done ... :)

He is one of my ward councillors and he does a lot of good work for the people of Padiham and Hapton. He does what a councillor should do and listens to peoples concerns and issues and does his best to sort them out. His party is irrelevant. At local level all you want is someone who represents the people he/she is elected for and he certainly does that. You can't say that about the majority on our council.

Anyway back to topic. The last two days I have been leaving work in the afternoon on Rossendale Road and found the traffic queueing back past the garage. It seems people are attempting to avoid J10 by trying J9. However there are roadworks near Network 65 and the ensuing queues are jamming up past the crematorium and clogging up the lights at Rosegrove and up along Rossendale Road.

If you are coming from Clayton way i would go on the Padiham by pass towards Fence and turn right towards Burnley,up past the hospital and approach the Turf that way.

It’s nationwide - cones out, Lane closures, temporary traffic lights, etc etc, and no one working. If you do see roadworkers, they are invariably either asleep in the van, feet up on dashboard, on a mobile phone, or 6 or 7 of em with their hands in pockets, watching 1 guy on a pneumatic drill, or a JCB. Where else can you get a job like that? And practically every day, there are traffic reports on the radio, stating “ overrunning roadworks “. No wonder.

If you are coming from Preston or that place of misery does it make sense to go to Junction 11 and come back on the A road
I think it skips 11 (westbound exit only) and goes to Junction 12 (Brierfield) after the Burnley turn off - this is what I usually do if there's any issues like this, travelling from Preston.

If you decide to go through Padiham, it's a good idea to turn right at George IV and head up
Liverpool Road/Rossy Rd, across M/c Rd and head for Cliviger, turning left at the junction at
the bottom of Glen View Rd and down Tod Rd.

You could also turn left at the top of Rossy Rd down M/c Rd.

Happy travels everyone - I'll be heading that way after the Padiham v Macclesfield match.

I’d avoid Rossy road going back myself, it’s probably the worse area at the minute, the queue was backed up to Usha last night at tea time

All this hassle to put suicide nets on a bridge they don’t use, and even if they did they would go to another bridge. The sad fact is that they are not putting these nets on the bridge they actually use.
Bunch of councillors looking for votes.
A sad indictment of our current society .

I work in Burnley normally starting at 8am travelling from Accy, owing to the demand shifts are variable. If I was anyone travelling to the game tomorrow from anywhere West of Rose Grove I would seriously advise you to get the train from Hapton, Huncoat, Accrington etc. As owing to a huge crowd at 6pm I reckon a journey from Accy will take well over an hour, and be quite stressful also. The roadworks are horrific. Good job there is not any other bridges anywhere near junction 10 is all I can say.

Leave the car, have a pint, get the train. Trust me, it's easier and less stressful.

The by pass is far better from Padiham. I use it just to avoid town centre traffic on a normal matchday. Traffic only slows down near the tip/industrial estates.

My matchday route to and from north Manchester for years has been Rawtenstall - Waterfoot - Burnley Rd East through Water- down Bacup Rd - Cliviger - Red Lees into Brunshaw Rd. Certainly think I'll be going that way today given the above carnage.

When the M66 has been gridlocked I've also gone through Rochdale, Whitworth and Bacup before now and never felt it was a massively long detour even if it's a constant 25mph crawl from Rochdale.
