England Test squad v NZ

Post by Milltown1882 » Wed May 18, 2022 9:27 am

Good to see a couple of new faces. No idea how Matt Parkinson still doesn’t get a chance.

Ben Stokes (c)
James Anderson
Jonny Bairstow
Stuart Broad
Harry Brook
Zak Crawley
Ben Foakes
Jack Leach
Alex Lees
Craig Overton
Ollie Pope
Matthew Potts
Joe Root

Very rare for a Lancs spinner to become established as a regular in the England side.
Can't remember many in 53 years watching us.

Happy that Brook and Potts have been given a chance.

Brook in particular looks a good talent

It’s just baffling at this point how Parkinson isn’t in. Started the season really well for Lancs too. And as for Craig Overton zzzzzzz

I recall Chris Schofield got a few games about twenty years ago. Prior to him I can only think of Roy Tattersall.

Tommy Greenhalgh, Rochdale’s best and Lancashire leg spin.
Very difficult for any spinner to get into the test side on home soil in England, the game and wickets are set up for seam bowlers.

Tbf Overton has had a decent start to the season with 22 wickets at an average of 16

Roy Tattersall was before my time but I certainly remember Tommy Greenhough playing for Lancs.

I think Chris Schofield played twice for England, scored a half century but didn't take a wicket.

Would have liked to have seen Parkinson given an opportunity.

Glad to see Anderson and Broad back in the fold, and Brook certainly deserves a shot as does Potts.

How Matty Parkinson is overlooked again baffles me, Leach is steady but he rarely threatens to bowl sides out, even on days 4 and 5 when your spinner should come into the game.

Craig Overton is another who's fortunate to retain his place, and it's likely that if Mahmood had been fit he'd have taken that spot.

Feel really sorry for Parkinson. Carried the drinks all winter and now not picked.
I think you can thank Tommy Greenough for igniting Schoey's interest in becoming a leg spinner. Tommy was a youth coach at Littleborough when Chris was a young lad. Schoey did indeed play 2 tests against Zimbabwe when Bumble was coach. Nasser Hussain, captain at the time was less than complimentary about Schofield 's bowling abilities!quote]

Yes, I forgot about Tommy Greenhough, amazing really in the last seventy years or so only three Lancs spinners( I think) have played for England.

Kerrigan got a cap too. If memory serves it was the last game of the Ashes series we'd already won and flat-track bully Shane Watson smashed him all over.

We have selected “Bowl batters in and don’t take wickets” Jack Leach instead.
Another John Embrury .
Need 20 wickets to win a test
Parkinson is a wicket taker and should be in , every time before Leach.

I don’t know how Jack Leach keeps getting in,is he seriously the best spinner we have?

So much for the bold new regime the idea of pope batting at 3 when he's never batted there for Surrey against one of the best pace attacks in the world is a baffling one , also not sure what Parkinson needs to do to get a cap bowled over 100 more overs than leach this summer and is consistently bowling wicket taking deliveries

That’s not how I read the line up. I thought it would be something like:

Crawley
Lees
Bairstow
Root
Brooks
Stokes
Foakes
Leach
Potts
Broad
Anderson

An international batsman should be able to bat anywhere in the order.
You will have to bat in many different situations.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bairstow gets the gloves back and bats at 7.

Madness with Foakes in the squad, and you just know Bairstow will drop a clanger somewhere in the series which will cost England a lot of runs.

And whoever bats at 7 runs the risk of being stranded with the tail, it's happened to Buttler several times recently when he's been left stranded when well set.

Foakes dropped a clanger and missed an easy stumping in the last West Indies test.

The WK position seems a little troubled, whoever can get us the most runs will win the shirt.

It’s been confirmed Bairstow is batting at 5. So it looks like Brooks won’t even feature

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Saqib Mahmood was ruled out for the season with a stress fracture of the lower back. The same has just been confirmed for Jofra Archer.

So that's Archer, Fisher & Mahmood our for the summer, Wood has fitness issues as does Stokes, will England be able to field a decent attack beyond the stalwarts in Anderson and Broad, Woakes isn't in the squad either I just noticed, is he another one on the casualty list?

If Archer can get back I could see him just playing franchise cricket in the IPL, Big Bash etc. Bowl 4 over spells and earn good money while you can, couldn't really blame him.

Think so, don’t think he’s played for Warks yet this season.
