Should Pope Go

Post by warksclaret » Tue May 24, 2022 5:31 pm

Should Nick move and I am certain most clarets would not begrudge him doing so after how he has performed, two very good keepers for the championship-Sam Johnston of WBA and Ben Foster of Watford. Both are high quality and free agents-would allow us to sell Peacock Farrell. A good keeper is a great start in rebuilding

Would we get much for BPF?

I think Hennessey is an absolutely fine number one in the Championship personally.

I hate to say it but yes, Pope should go right now whilst his stock is high, whilst he’s in fantastic form and in the England squad. He’s finished the season superbly and we should get £25 million comfortably for him. One thing I’ve grown to realise in recent years is that we’re probably too attached to our players (had we sold Tarky and McNeil 18 months ago, we’d probably be no worse off but in a much stronger financial position).

I also think that right now, if this did happen, we shouldn’t prioritise a new number one for a fee, unless we can tempt someone to join on a free. Wayne Hennessey would be a very good number one at championship level and our priority should be building a rock solid defence in front of him. Build the wall and the rest will take care of itself.

Right now, Pope, sadly, is key to paying off a big slab of debt and at a league lower, I think we can afford to lose him, as sad as I am about that.

Agree on Foster and Johnstone but Hennessey is more than suitable backup. Spurs signing Forster and West Ham signing Areola permanently already ticks off 2 of the potential destinations for Pope.

Similar to when Tripper went for me, Pope has been amazing for us, deserves to be playing at a higher level and would go with my blessing.

Hopefully unlike Tripps we get what he's actually worth though. 25-30 Million would be a good deal. He's 30 otherwise I'd want nearer 40.

Literally any combination of Foster, Johnstone,
Hennessey and then BPF as back up would be more than adequate I think. I'd even have Heaton back with Hennessey as a back up. Despite how good our goalkeepers have been in recent times I think this is one of the easiest positions for us to solve.

Just one word of caution though, I agreed with another poster on a different thread about us signing a young counterpart to any older player we sign. So I'd be either advocating BPF staying (assuming we think he can still improve), or getting a younger keeper to be back up if we went for any of the names above.

Personally don't see us even needing to waste money on another GK, sell Pope with our blessing but we've still got three goalkeepers good enough for the championship without wasting money, that can be strengthened if we regain promotion.
If Mee signs I don't think we need another centre half, right back is sorted, we need backup left back if Pieters goes.
I'd tie Barnes down and have JRod Barnes Wout and Richardson as our strikers. It'd be midfield that needs sorting

WH will be perfectly adequate for the Championship.
We'll need any spare cash for other positions.

As silly as it sounds if he leaves it could harm his England chances if he's sat on a bench somewhere. At least with us he's playing every week and Southgate can assess his form.

He's shown he's prepared to pick championship players if they're good enough. The major thing for NP would be the financial rewards from a move, so if he goes all the best to the lad..he deserves a good move..

No substitute for competition. Yes Hennessy is good but to have two fighting for the shirt is how it should be.We have seen too little of it in our club

Think it is extremely likely he we move back to the Premier this close season, but it may be that he is willing to give it a year to see if we can bounce back before the next international tournament. Obviously Pope would be major plus for any incoming manager.

Unfortunately yes, for himself.
Playing for a bigger club will probably get him the England no1 shirt.
He's in fantastic form at the minute, so personally I wouldn't entertain any bargain hunters. He is worth top dollar, and unless we are offered that, then any potential move should be laughed at.

For those readers that feel just Hennessy is sufficeint in the second tier both Heaton and Pope got bad shoulder injuries at the start of respective seasons and were out for the majority of the season. Peacock Farrell just not good enough-my neighbour is a Wednesday fan who s home and away, says he started off well, but then made some big clangers including the key play offs

We should never have let Billy Mercer go.

Am I right that SD inherited him, he didn’t bring him to the club?

If I was Pope I know exactly what I'd be doing. He's an England International and wants to push his claims to that spot, plus he's up there with the best keepers in the PL (notwithstanding his dodgy kicking). To not just further his career, but to simply keep it at the level he's worked so hard to reach, he really HAS to move. It's a no brainer tbh and the club will actually benefit handsomely BTW.

Doesn’t matter if he moves or not - Gareth will not pick him ahead of Pickford.
He probably hasn’t tested either of them in sweat tents yet which tells you everything you need to know about our preparation for the WC

Sky’s the limit .should he go - rather he didn’t but he will be a great asset anywhere - except Everton

Be surprised if Pope doesn't go, but if he does we should be holding out for a good fee, £25m at least, England squad member just like Ramsdale, and he went for about £30m I think with potential add-on's I believe.

Wherever Nick ends up he'll go with all our best wishes as he's been tremendous throughout his Clarets career, however he deserves to be playing PL football, and alas we can't offer him that at present.

This is the key question really. Then you've got to add in that the team can't want or need a goalkeeper who is great on the ball, and are happy to spend upwards of £20m on a 30-year-old goalkeeper. Nobody is going to pay that for a number two either. Pope is brilliant but I'm not sure the market for him will be huge.

As a pure shot-stopper Pope is one of the best in the country but the way the game is going, many managers would rather have a goalkeeper who is good on the ball rather than good at keeping the ball out of his net. Weird, for me, but Pope would need to improve a lot with his kicking to play that sort of role without being a bit of a liability.

I think Newcastle would be a good move but they seem to be after Henderson instead.

He could go to Everton. Become their number 1 over Pickford and Southgate would still pick Pickford for England.

But as Jambo says would they want to pay 25 to 30 m for an upgrade (which might be relatively smallish) when they might need to spend elsewhere.

Plus now Kompany seems to be on board do you think Nuck might fancy hanging around?

A few months ago when it was first rumoured 20m to Fulham should we be relegated, I'd have taken that. His performances over the past few months have made me reconsider that fee to a minimum of 30m and I still think someone's gonna get a good deal at that!

He's our best keeper over the last 40 years but should be the first one to sell if we can? He's at his best making save after save.
We won't be needing that in the championship.

One sale of 30m plus should be all that's needed to pay debts and have a little transfer fund.

If he stays, he will be great and much needed for when we go back up.

I have a sneaky feeling he may stay.

12 months left on his contract he could get a guaranteed pay day next year in a free.

He isn't ousting the England Hollywood keepers that Southgate likes.

He has saved us about 21 points minimum this season, imagine in the Championship!

Absolutely brilliant goalkeeper who deserves to play at the very highest level so I'm resigned to him going, as much as I love seeing him between the posts for us. I would think that selling him is also the easiest way of dealing with making the necessary partial repayment of the £65M loan.

We have an option to extend his contract by 12 months, so he’s effectively got 2 years left on his contract.

And if the rumours are true he is about to face a 50 per cent pay cut and the club need the money.

He will go whether he wants to or otherwise.

He's been brilliant for us.
