Long time till the season starts, let’s see who he goes for. My shout would be Delap at City.

was hoping we'd freshen it up with youth, retaining 3 hoofball old washed up strikers kinda goes against that.

Really good news. That's a couple signed. Just a manager, asst, few coaches and tge rest of the squad, in the next couple of weeks!
Great to have Barnes in the mix. Proper Claret!

I wouldn’t say Vydra and Rodriguez are hoofball. In fact, whenever both were in the team together, arguably we played some of our best football, it was definitely more on the deck than with others.
And don’t forget, there needs to be a balance with how many new players we sign as it’s unlikely we’ll be splashing.

I think it’s great news, Jay , Vydra, and Barnes. Better than the old days with one striker we sold each Jan window.

Barnes must be pinching himself!
Never in a million years did he expect that! Was probably waiting for the league 1 clubs to contact his agent

Nothing we can do about the deal, however he has a Claret shirt and as with all players gets 100% backing.

Another season of sh!t housing then. This time in the Championship. I cannot fault his effort and desire but he isn’t the future in my view. Hopefully he has taken a significant drop in salary and is to be used as cover.

Why? Even Police chiefs have kept their jobs after being caught drink driving.
I don’t approve of drink driving in any way shape or form, however you cannot just bin someone for getting convicted for it if it isn’t part of his job description to drive a car.

Waits for the ‘role model’ replies….

I agree btw
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
He’s still been involved in 7 championship seasons / campaigns in his career so he knows the championship.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 6:45 pmIt's a slight misconception, Barnes has spent a lot more seasons and games as a PL player than in the Championship.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
He does and more importantly he knows what it takes to get out of the Championship, and it is only a year, so as long as we buy or promote a younger striker then it does make sense to retain Ash and Jay's knowledge at this level.

Yes, starting about 15 years ago when he played 0 games for Plymouth.
Not disagreeing that he's played a fair number of games (150ish) at 2nd tier, but it was a while ago.
Not sure he's any sort of model or tutor as to how to play there now.
much as I really like Ashley Barnes I doubt his ability to endure an active season at this level.
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
What's not to like with a choice of from at least three strikers? Can't remember many championship seasons when we had such a luxury.

Barnes will only score if we get a penalty and that's if Jay is not on the pitch
Jay will pick up an injury at some stage .
This recipe is a disaster waiting to happen

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
If we had no choice then ok. But not what we need now. I think J Rod will be ok in the champ though he just wasnt up to PL standard anymore.
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
I don't see him featuring much under a new manager. I'd like to think Lewis Richardson will be involved with the first team squad if he can get fit.
Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Barnes being renewed+ optimism rather depends on where you think we will finish next season.
He's clearly taken a wage cut, thinks he has no better option, and I think we can expect minimal output at a level where dark arts rather than skill will not be a huge surprise.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Fair play to him, he's tenacious, puts it about a bit, probably good in the dressing room. But hasn't been good enough for at least two years. I know it's a drop in standard to the Championship but it'd need to be some drop for his goalless flopping about to be much use to us.

Stephens good in the dressing room by all accounts

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
My prediction is that he will barely be involved and may even go out on loan.
Remember, if it’s based on nothing other than it being an automatic renewal due to games played, the club had no say in this. Kompany wants pace and mobility in his forward line (as I posted a quote from him recently stating just that), I really don’t see Ash fitting that profile - nor Weghorst for that matter.
I can see Kompany seeking two strikers considering Vydra is out injured too. Maybe a loan and a permanent, no idea what the calibre of strikers at Anderlecht are like?

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Barnes, with the understandable lack of interest from elsewhere, resigns himself to a final season at Burnley.
If he figures significantly on the pitch we're probably in trouble.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Something doesn’t quite add up with this. Before the last game of the season Barnes said something along the lines of a conversation was needed with the board about his future. If the contract was an auto renewal Barnes already knew he was staying, in which case why the need for the conversation? Unless it was about potentially paying him out the additional 12 months?
Personally pleased he’s sticking around for another season. Much rather have someone with a bit of passion and fight than Weghorst.

Well I disagree.
The defenders are slower, less savvy and not as good by a long way compared To the premiership.
The goalkeepers are no where near as good.
They will score goals, no idea where you pluck the Jay will get injured, he is not gudmonson.
We have no idea when Vydra will be fit, no one has any idea on what surgery he has had.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
The defenders also tend to be more physical, so they'll be perfectly happy to wrestle with Barnes for 90 minutes. He always looks less effective if he's up against a big strong lad who he can't niggle/bully.Lowbankclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 10:01 pmWell I disagree.

All's I'll ask is how many of those who slag Barnes off for anything he does are the same ones berating people and telling them to "get behind the team" when they say anything?

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Jay in his season in a championship got 22 goals.
Barnes about 6 but got more n the prem so seems unusual.
Vydra got 22 as well.
Your being way to hard on them. If we give them the service they will easily score 20 a season.

Jay was 28 in his last championship season at the peak of his abilities.
Ashley Barnes is 33 a month or two into the season
Vydra is out for the foreseeable.
It’s unlikely they will get 30 goals between them.

Re: ARTICLE: Barnes extends Burnley stay
Only 3 teams scored more than 64 goals last season in the Championship - Fulham, Bournemouth and Forest, so the chances of any team having 3 players who score + 50 between them must be remote.Lowbankclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 10:30 pmJay in his season in a championship got 22 goals.

Added to that, we don't know when or if Vydra will be able to feature, Barnes hasn't scored in open play for Burnley since February 2021, and Rodriguez has only scored 3 PL goals over the past 2 seasons, (and both are a year older), so it seems pretty unlikely to me that they will be prolific next season.

Have you watched any Championship football recently, the standard is way lower than when we were there last. Yes I think they will be prolific next season if we give them service.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sat Jun 11, 2022 1:15 pmOnly 3 teams scored more than 64 goals last season in the Championship - Fulham, Bournemouth and Forest, so the chances of any team having 3 players who score + 50 between them must be remote.

Talk in this thread was that the option for the extra year was in Barnes’ favour, I think CT was certain of this.
However, this quote from Barnes yesterday suggests it was the other way round:
"Once the Club took up the option, I was delighted to get back here and get this new adventure underway.”

Apologies, not in Barnes’ favour, but more an automatic thing rather than a choice.
