We didn’t get relegated until 79/80, although it had been coming for a while!

I'm fairly sure that was the season we really struggled over the first half and looked somewhat doomed, but came to late on and suddenly went on a good run which led to survival. The year after when we finished mid table as someone has shown might have been the one which started similarly poorly, but Kindon suddenly arrived back a few months in (no transfer windows then) and we started firing.

The two home attendances on either side of that Southampton defeat were Hereford 8,748 and Carlisle 10,834.

After the purple patch in the early 1970's interest was certainly on the wane as the downward slide set in, although we actually finished that season in 16th position. Scoring goals was proving difficult and we only managed 46 all season with Peter Noble and Malcolm Smith contributing 24 of those between them.

Oh they did though. They were down at @5000 before JW sprayed them with cash. My cousin played for them and he said they could hardly afford the electric bill at one point. So some things don't change!!!

That happened in 1977/78; no relegation struggle the year after; relegation the next season. Little did we know what was in store for us.

Chelsea picked up under Bates, to about a Leeds level now. Putin’s puppet propelled them to the top table… and the fans came out of the woodwork, as ‘fans’ do… though they’ve all been among the stalwarts, when asked.

Hereford, Plymouth Carlisle relegated; Clarets 16th but only 2 points above the 3rd bottom club, Orient & Cardiff (19th & 18th) escaped on goal difference.
Wolves, Chelsea & Forest (in that order) were top 3. Forest went on to win Division one the season after (that Clough fellow).

Wasn't Malcolm Smith the one who looked great as a goal scorer whilst on loan only for it to fall to pieces once he'd signed permanently?
