Complete joke.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 12:14 pmGenuinely selfish decision that. Putting a desire to look ‘respectful’ over kids health and enjoyment. Who the hell thinks she’d have wanted anything like this?
Re: Game postponed
So our head of state for 70 years who dedicated her life to duty is the same as Elton John dying?

I’ve just got off the phone to the facilities manager at the Uni who lease their pitches to my grassroots club.
They’ve been told to expect all games to be off next weekend too.

Elton John has done more for my life than the queen. I’d be more upset if he’d died.

End of the day, it’s a week or so. We can all deal with no football for a week and a bit can’t we? I’m not saying it’s a right or wrong decision, just looking at it like that - it’s not a big ask really is my attitude.

Of course we can. We could all do without a hell of a lot less throughout the Covid pandemic, but at least there was a rational reason for those deprivation of liberties.jedi_master wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 12:46 pmEnd of the day, it’s a week or so. Deprivation of liberties? A bit OTT, surely. You are deprived of the liberty of watching football all through the summer, albeit for a different reason. You were deprived of the liberty of watching Burnley v Spurs last season when it snowed.

Re: Game postponed
People are being deprived of going to events they've paid for and paid for travel and accommodation arrangements for. Kids are being deprived of playing sport - I mean where is the logic in this at all? Which ever way you look at it, and however trivial you may find it, it is a deprivation of liberty - that's just a fact.

They can play football with their mates, no one is stopping them. The formal matches have been postponed like they have been year after year since the beginning of organised football without people screaming about ‘civil liberties’.

It is not a fact that postponing a football match infringes anyones civil liberties.

Re: Game postponed
I haven't used the term 'civil liberties' - you did, I used the word liberties - there's quite a difference.
Liberty; the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behaviour, or political views.
People's liberties are being infringed, it's just a fact, no matter how minor the infringement. Like I said, there's absolutely no reason at all why kids shouldn't be allowed to play their grassroots games this weekend - or can you give me one?

There's no tradition here either, this is very much a modern world phenomenon, never did it for the last monarch.
Probably cancel kid's grassroots too, which is something I'd probably move from 'vexed' to 'furious' about.
Re: Game postponed
No, the organisation that runs football has decided to postpone it’s matches. That’s nothing to do with ‘liberties’, the people who run the competition are free to do what they like (within the law), they decide when the fixtures are played or not played.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 1:50 pmI haven't used the term 'civil liberties' - you did, I used the word liberties - there's quite a difference.

Re: Game postponed
It’s not down to Martin to give you a reason, even if he could. The fact is; the decision has been made in the appropriate circles that football isn’t going to go ahead. Why that decision has been made is of little relevance, all we can do is go along with it during this period of national mourning. It’s here and it’s happening, so second guessing why is pointless, crass and somewhat disrespectful. Just stand by the country and respectfully observe the big picture as I, and many others, are doing.

Re: Game postponed
Correct
Your liberty would be infringed if there WAS a match taking place, but for some spurious reason you weren't allowed to attend it.
Re: Game postponed
There’s no need to ask why, the statements make it clear it’s ‘as a mark of respect’.

Re: Game postponed
That's a fair enough point, and while technically using the word 'liberties' may not have been correct, it doesn't detract from my point.
Re: Game postponed
Yet to see anyone actually explain how going ahead with fixtures this weekend would have been disrespectful.

Re: Game postponed
Whilst not wishing to become in any way embroiled in an argument as there are clearly widely differing views on here regarding this and tbf I respect them all as we all see things differently, but I will say this. I initially kind of understand why our match this evening had to be called off "out of respect" etc, but I've been to town this morning and life in every other sphere seems to be carrying on absolutely as normal. Cafés are open and very full, Primark, Next, M&S et al doing brisk business and the roads all very busy with traffic. I'm not entirely sure why sport (not just footy) feels the need to cancel in order to appear respectful when other areas of life really don't. I do accept that when it comes to the funeral in a few days time, pretty much everything will shut down and I get that, but as of now it only really seems to be sport and I'm not sure I get it. A 2 minute silence before starting might have been a better way to go, but I don't know. On another note I saw several Norwich fans in town who clearly had already made the long trip before they knew they wouldn't see a game, but I guess at least they can now take in the sights!!!

Re: Game postponed
The implication of pausing football "as a mark of respect" is that going ahead with fixtures would have been disrespectful. Otherwise it's not showing any respect, it's just an arbitrary decision.
Re: Game postponed
It’s allowed as long as you ask the right question. Kids aren’t being stopped playing football.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 2:27 pmCan we ask “how” stopping kids playing football is “a mark of respect”?

Re: Game postponed
No, they’re not two sides of the same coin. Making a gesture as a sign of respect doesn’t mean making a different gesture (or no gesture at all) is disrespectful.

Ok, Can we ask “how” stopping kids playing in their football teams in an arranged league on Saturday 9th September 2022 is “a mark of respect”?

Re: Game postponed
Not really, it's just football making the decision, which they feel is right, to show a moment of respect for what is a momentous occasion for the country. Our late Queen was a patron of the FA and William is the President of the FA - perhaps this also was part of their decision.
Racing paused, cricket paused, golf paused, why shouldn't football?

I get it btw if you are ex military, and the oath of allegiance to the Queen makes this a huge thing, but its still not on to not understand why some of us what to remember her while watching football and our kids play football
