Strange one

Post by Tricky Trevor » Fri Nov 04, 2022 3:12 pm

Sorry if mentioned elsewhere. In the first minute on Wednesday Beyer played the ball against one of them to get a goal kick. He then kicked the ball to Muric who spotted the ball and played it back to Beyer. Beyer traps it then leans down and puts his hand on the ball before playing it, as a GK to Muric.
Penalty for me.

Like the Ronaldo goal that was disallowed.

I “thought” I also saw that, but nobody else appeared to notice it so I assumed I was imagining it

When Muric "spotted" it, did he use his hands or just role it into place with his feet? If he placed it with his hands then could have been a penalty/ID FC. If he didn't and he just passed the ball back to Beyer before he placed it, then the ball was never officially "spotted" until Beyer put his hand on it.

Would it be a penalty or an indirect free kick?

I’ve always thought that a set piece should have to be placed by the hand before it can be legally played to avoid any ambiguity.

They did that twice in the first half.
Not sure what the point of it was.

Had the ref blown the whistle somewhere in this episode?

I remember it at the time, but thought nothing of it, it seemed obvious that Beyer was to take the goal kick.
Was the ball moving when Muric played it back?

Just watched again and it is unclear, goes to a close up of Beyer before Muric plays the ball to him.

I noticed it and did momentarily glance at the ref. It's an age old thing for me and goes on in many matches. When is a free kick (or goal kick) actually taken. Sometimes one guy seems to tap it to another player and I think in a good number of cases the first player genuinely believes he's "playing it", but his mate isn't on the same wavelength and picks it up and sets it down and he "takes it". Refs never (well barely ever) pick up on it, but it genuinely can be difficult to determine exactly who is tapping the ball to someone else to take the kick and who is actually putting the ball in play. Whether there was a mis communication and this is what happened on Wednesday I don't know, but it's not the first time in all my years watching footy that I've wondered whether a ref was going to suddenly blow up for a free kick or even penalty.
