We can have a lightweight defence who aren't tall, if that's how VK wants to play. What that means though is you need a really commanding keeper who can command his six-yard box and give the defence confidence that he's gonna take everything that comes into the box, and relieve some pressure. Unfortunately, he's not that type of goalkeeper hence we have these types of games

Edit: we need a new goalkeeper January to rectify this deficit in the team, it's a real weak link.
I think it's easy to point fingers at Muric but he's done a lot more today to defend our lead than anyone else. The defence has been atrocious. You can't blame the goalkeeper when players are being unmarked left right and centre.

Sounds like Barnes might have taken his bat home. Was ready to come on then went to dressing room !!
Good hopefully seen last of him

Eventually playing with only 2 defenders is gonna find you out especially against a big physical team

Absolutely.

Some people can't see past the fact we're top of the league, but we won't stay there if we continue to defend like we do. Something definitely needs changing back there.

This is the Championship. All teams throw one of these in every now and again. We’re due one. VK knows where the weaknesses are. We’re still top and a long way to go.

Strangely, this could prove to be a good thing.

We’ve a big lesson to learn from this - the players and probably VK too. We’ve been suckered by a half decent, physical, typical championship side. That’s not a criticism of Sheffield United, it’s what a lot of team in this division are like and we’ve struggled to deal with it.

Hell, this was us in years gone by.

I've given up getting mad on this thread, I'm sure VK will tear then a new one.

Today wasn't just a "bad day at the races" but it was more a reaffirming what's we've seen for the last few games, a very weak defense.

And I'm not having all of this thrown at Muric because that's unfair, the back 5 + Muric have been turd....infact Muric could have stopped it being 8-2

These lot are a big physical bunch , and in hindsight maybe we should of gone with more experienced players such as Taylor , Roberts, JBG and even Barnes . Hopefully just a blip and we'll be back to our best next week .

After Muric’s horror show in the first half Heckingbottom’s team talk was easy. He’s simply not good enough. He made a few saves after 65 minutes but the damage was already done. Get him dropped.

Starting Tella up front on his own against 3 big CB’s is absolutely crackers n’all. VK has got to learn from this.

This is the type of performance where the players are locked in the dressing room and given a dressing down at full time. That second half performance was abysmal

That's the thing that concerns me the most. We've been mostly appalling at dealing with crosses all season, it's just we've had so much possession we don't give that many away. But when we do, we look dire.

When I saw the team at 11:30, I knew exactly what would happen today. A repeat of West Brom away, but on steroids. So it's proved.

And the other thing…pretty much every single marginal decision has gone against us today. Offsides, dodgy corners and I’ve counted at least 10 occasions where their players are holding ours in the box. Doesn’t excuse defending but pretty sure Darren Bond is a Blackburn fan.

The big fear now is that every team is going to go Pulis era Stoke against us now, as it will work.

We don’t have an answer to it within our squad.

I'll repeat what I've said countless times on here since the season started, vito and maatsen sre poor defensive fullbacks. We need to start with Lowton/Roberts and Taylor at rb and lb. We also need height at centre back against teams like this.

Indeed, let’s not forget McBurnie should have been off for elbowing Beyer in the head too.

Its not a complicated blueprint. I think to our advantage, no other team in the championship is as big/physical as Sheffield. Also, I think Brownhill, Roberts, and Jay Rod would have helped defend corners better.

Sadly, I don’t think any passing on is needed.

All they need to do is watch the highlights and that’s without the teams of analysts that they will all have.

I think the manager has to accept some of the responsibility here.
It was clear to see at half time that we needed more players who can actually win a header when defending and that they were going to launch it in the box every time!

Muric has been shaky and nervy but we haven't conceded from the corners/long throws he's flapped at.

This has to be the biggest case of scapegoating I've ever seen. How you can blame the goalkeeper today when our defenders aren't even marking is beyond me.

Sure Muric has a bad command of the area and poor handling but you can't blame him for the goals which were just down to poor defending.

Think it is fair to say that this nightmarish performance has been thoroughly induced by the intensity of Sheffield in the second half. Sometimes just have to say that the opponent was better otherwise this would be happening every week. While our defence has always been a little suspect it is forunate that there are few sides as good as them in the league...

We've been useless with the ball since Bastien went off, completely unable to get up the pitch and give them any defending to do. Bad substitution.
Sheff Utd haven't done anything differently, it's just that the set pieces that threatened in the first half have gone in in the second.
