What outstanding options we have in both full back roles.

Can't be dropped playing like he did tonight, that was the swashbuckling Roberts we'd expected, offering goals and assists and a constant menace down the right.

Re: Roberts
I have been a critic of Roberts especially early in the season. However recently he has been nothing short of superb.
The partnership of him and Benson is becoming very effective

Since he made it to the world cup and no longer needs to hold back, he's on fire. That goal was class of the highest level.

Re: Roberts
Really happy for him.
Something was off first half of the season - even when he scored his first goal this season his body language was not what you'd expect. I remember an assist he got at the Turf as well, instead of congratulating the scorer he turned around and ran straight back to his position. I reserved judgement as you never know what's going on with a player privately. I'm sure he had one eye on the World Cup too.
Complete contrast now. Playing well consistently and great to hear the crowd singing his name after his (superb) goal. We have great depth in both full back positions.

Roberts complimented benson so well tonight, it was like the instructions had changed and roberts was able to play wider, instead of playing as the 3rd cb
Re: Roberts
Was brilliant tonight, also thought it was a fantastic through ball from Charlie Taylor for our third which went under the radar.

Re: Roberts
I think he's suffered in the fan's eyes because he's been asked to play a very tactical role for most of this season, but tonight he was allowed to stay wide and play his natural game. Could have been due to them playing wingbacks that he was asked to exploit that with Benson? Either way, really pleased to see some praise for him and having the fans chant his name will do him a load of good.

Re: Roberts
Great game today……. I’ve been very critical of him in the past but he’s been really good the last couple of games…. The competition for each position is paying off ….. Vitinho will be champing at the bit when he’s fit.
This team is flying…….. almost unimaginable.

Re: Roberts
I’d argue his early season form was due to the moans and groans from the crowd he got on a weekly basis. Some fans had in their heads he didn’t want to be here, others thought he was crap, then there was the factor of the World Cup, maybe for his standards he was slightly out of form.DefourFiveSix wrote: ↑Tue Dec 27, 2022 10:43 pmReally happy for him.

Makes you play those 5 yard backward passes instead of the 30 yard runs into the opposition box getting goals and assists. We’re now seeing the Roberts I know he’s capable of, playing with confidence, freedom and with a smile on his face. Long may it continue!

Re: Roberts
We change tactics depending on the opposition, the overload was down their left hand side, Roberts and Benson doubled up on their left wing back and Maatsen stayed further back.

He's one who's benefitted from the departure of SD. He seems to be enjoying his football again under VK as you could see at the final whistle, when they were engaged in a long conversation.

Re: Roberts
I’ve preferred Vintinho, but Roberts had a very good game.
I have been wondering the extent to which a once in a career World Cup had been playing on Roberts’ mind. Not saying he wasn’t giving his all, but it’d only be human to have the threat of injury niggling away in his head.
Free from that now, we might just see a better version.

Re: Roberts
Roberts has been unfairly criticised all season long because VK has held him back and narrow to allow Maatsen to bomb forward, tonight it was Maatsen's turn to sit with Roberts bombing forward. Incredible management really, shows how fluid and in depth VK's tactics are, tiny little tweaks to exploit sides.

Re: Roberts
I think Roberts showed what he is about last night,Could have got a second too. His running is so intelligent and the ball from Benson that slipped him in for the first goal was divine. Its the one thing we missed last season-someone getting behind their back line and cutting the ball back

Re: Roberts
The shackles are off for Robert’s.
Last season he was recruited to play a strict, safety first role in a relegation haunted Dyche team against Prem. quality opponents. He was reluctant to leave his boyhood club, but agreed to the transfer to help them with their financial problems. He was however not immediately accepted by the Burnley fans having replaced fans favourite, Matt Lowton.
As a proud Welshman, this season to date he has been reluctant to jeopardise his one-off World Cup chances and IMO he has played conservatively in some games to avoid injury, which cost him his place to Vitinho. I also noted that he was unavailable to play against his home team Swansea, but played with full-on enthusiasm against their fierce rivals, Cardiff.
He has finally thrown off those burdens, given a free role by VK and is now winning the fans over. We will I believe see a new player from now on who has finally settled at Burnley and is really enjoying his football again.

Re: Roberts
Superb goal as well, the move and the finish.
Re: Roberts
Roberts became a “Claret” last night. It’s took him some time with illness and Dycheball (not a dig at Sean by the way) The fans singing his name also would be music to his ears - he’s clearly a confidence player.
A brilliant performance and all round team display BUT fantastically only 3rd gear. Imagine when this fine oiled machine really clicks in !

I'm not saying I agree with it, but if I was my countries first choice full back in its first WC for sixty years, I think it might be on my mind as well
And lets face it, the reason that Vitinhio got in his position so quickly does rather suggest that VK was well aware of it as well

Re: Roberts
He didn't need to admit that, it was blatantly obvious to anyone watching us against Sheffield United when he backed out of a challenge that was 80/20 in his favour. I said on here after Wales got knocked out that we will see what Roberts is really about after he returned, so it has proven. He has been excellent and arguably for the first time in his career at Burnley he is producing consistently strong performances both forwards and backwards. It's his shirt now, and when Vitinho is fit he will keep pushing Connor which can only be good for him in maintaining the levels he is showing.
