Got to be Penrith for me not the score line but where we have come from and those days were great because I hadn't Sampled the premiership and following the CLARETS was great then sampling the local beer on our travels wherever it took us round the country and close second was Plymouth away in the play offs as no one gave us a chance . A couple I don't think have featured yet.. King Arthur and the 3-2 win at PNE when we were top of the league. And the 3-2 at Sheffield Utd under Coyle. I think the Sheffield and Huddersfield aways are always among the best, and getting a rare win there was a bonus.

I remember going Maine Road to watch us in the Charity Shield against City. Mid 70s it would be...Big Colin Waldron scored in our 1-0 win.
Don't know how we ended up playing in the Charity Shield anyway as we didn't win the FA Cup or League previous season....oh well, another trophy I suppose!

The reason was that, for the third consecutive year, both the League winners (Liverpool) and FA Cup wnners (Sunderland) chose not to compete. We were invited to take part, as Second Division Champions, against Man City (reigning Charity Shield holders).

We won the game 1-0 in what was our third attempt at the Charity Shield, previously lost against Tottenham in 1921 and drawn against Wolves in 1960.

So difficult to nominate just one and so many have already been posted earlier in the thread.

However, sometimes it's the unexpected result/performance that stays in the memory and, for me, that's the FA Cup Third Round game at Tottenham in 1963. Burnley were themselves a great team at the time but still Spurs were "King's of the Castle". We'd played them in the Semi-final in '61 and lost 3-0 and then the Final in '62 losing 3-1.

So to be drawn against them in the Third Round the very next season was hardly the ideal draw. The game was postponed a couple of times, I think, due to the big freeze of '63, but finally on a Wednesday afternoon on a snow-covered White Hart Lane, we played brilliantly winning 3-0 and simply blew them away. A day to remember.

Obviously promotion/title winning games are up there such as Preston/York/Charlton then Wembley twice and of course the semi at Reading. Then there are all the wins I’ve seen at Ewood.

But almost three years ago, after a wait of almost 55 years, I finally saw us win at Old Trafford. So special, and I nominate that one.

Olympiaccos for me. I was very lucky as was already away in Greece when the draw was made after beating Istanbul Besakashir. To be fair it cost as much to fly all four of us to Athens and book a hotel for the night as it would travelling from England.

When we got to the hotel the chap handing the tickets out told us my youngest lad, was the youngest Claret there.

Although we got beat it was great to be there and see the boys back in Europe.

Yep I agree on that one,,never knew I was going till 2 days before.

First time I ever had iced coffee too.Heat that night was unbearable and they didnt sell beer on the ground,just had to get something liquid inside me.Quite fond of it now though..lol!!

Very difficult to say as a lot of great memories are about where you are in your life (young and care free etc) and who you are with. If you followed Burnley in the 1980s and 1990s like I did you soon became to realise that the game and result was almost secondary to the whole day with your friends as more often than not we lost to somebody rubbish.

So I’m going to indulge myself in naming a few of my favourites but in no particular order.

Darlington score I think was 1-1……some fruit loop burnley fan climbed up the floodlight

Derby - in the cup. When the game was abandoned for fog. Took us 7 hours to get home but very funny night.

Wrexham : 6-2 victory

Wolves ; Stockport and Sheff United at Wembley : the stress of the last 2 was actually not enjoyable but the whole day was very memorable.

Liverpool away in milk cup semi final. 3-0 defeat. I went with one of the directors and his family. Fantastic experience and Derek Scott did miss a sitter !

Man United - the last few times. Even the 3-1 defeat I thought we were brilliant and great goal from Danny Ings. My favourite was the 2-2 when Defour scored the fantastic defeat. Incredibly the only one I have missed recently is the victory as I was away on holiday !!

Luton - think it was a 3-2 win.

Carlisle in our promotion season : 1-1 draw in our promotion season was an anti climax but the whole day and our support was brilliant.

Halifax - we won possibly 3-1. Brendon O Connell scored at least one for us. We had all of the home end. Went out in the “fax” after !!

Preston in semi final of Sherpa van - definitely one of my favourites. Still don’t know how we won and I still wake up with nightmares about their winger Mooney !!

Blackburn - 2-1 Shackell and Ings. Unbelievable day.

All our other wins at Blackburn also great days /evenings !

Blackpool - can’t even remember the result but Winnie White played brilliantly, we gave dogs abuse to Owen Oyston who for some reason paraded himself in front of the away fans….and we went on the Pleasure Beach after the game !!


I know there will be many I have forgotten…..and as I said a lot of the enjoyment is about who you are with and the hope and optimism of winning rather than the actual result !!

Apologies I thought this was about Burnley away days. If I can count Leeds then I think it would have to be the 2001 Champions League Quarter Final away at Deportivo La Coruña. We lost 2-0 but were defending a magnificent 3-0 lead from the first leg at Elland Road.

For a small town Burnley are well supported but I feel sorry for you lot sometimes that you will never experience the level of support and atmosphere I was apart of that night in Spain.

Anyway I still enjoyed Rotherham away all the same

But, for me, Plymouth away in the play off semi final in ‘94. They were the clear favourites and got a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the Turf. They unveiled a new kit to wear that night in readiness for their Wembley trip and were already taking coach bookings from their supporters for Wembley before the game. Enter Super Johnny Francis…..

As someone else has mentioned about the Reading/Sheff Utd games in 09, sometimes the semi final is better or more enjoyable than the actual final - this one was right up there for me!

Deepdale 73 was good, and Chelsea League cup a brilliant day, but i think one of the best was Reading away leg Championship play off, what an atmosphere, when i saw the post i originally thought it meant regular away day fixture, in which case always enjoyed Southampton away has one of my best mates was a southampton fan and i had quite a few successses there

I'm having a right senior moment! The game on Boxing Day 1974 was 2-2 and it was Leighton James who scored our goals.

My memory is obviously diminished due to watching this game from the comfort of the Geldhert End (Kop) with some mates who were all Leeds fans.

I was the sole Burnley fan in a West Yorkshire recruited Army unit.

I was 16 and got the Shara ( coach!) Pick up from Rawtenstall about 7am. Pick ups on the way, bad roads, no m'ways, arrived late, missed kick off by 15 mins. Was an avid collector of match day programs then

Hi Lord Bob...could have been. Their emblem was a tiger leaping thru a hoop on the rear luggage boot was Ellen Smith I believe...could have them or Yelloway or Ben Barnes coaches.. getting on for nearly 60 years ago, so memories of the game still with me but not the coach company!!
I remember going in an Ellen Smith coach to Bramhall Lane....cos it broke down on way back!!!...didn't get home till nearly midnight from Sheffield!!

I was lucky enough to be at Reading for the play-off semi- final and at Luton for the Spicer/Ade double act. Both are majestically memorable.
For sheer enjoyment I fondly remember a game away to Oxford in April 2000, when we won 2:1. It was the only game I saw Ian Wright play for us, and he was irrepressible. Highlight was him nicking the ball from a bemused Oxford player and passing to Paul Weller( I think ) for a great goal.
